Anybody with taste and history with BMW design will look at this abomination and puke their guts out. What has happened to BMW. Tsk tsk. This is what a beautiful 7 series used to look like:

Sorry, but it's not even close. Merc's S Class outsells the 7er 3-to-1.

I presume many of us still prefer the design cues from the 80's, 90's and 00's. I was stunned by the E23, E26, E30, E31, E28, E26, E32, E34, E39, E38,.... The character lines were sharp, the beltline was low, the greenhouse was elegant (with the typical hofmeister kink), the front overhang was short, the typical aggressive circular front lights, etc... Now, many new designs are the opposite of "sharp", rather bloated, front overhang is longer, etc... also for no obvious reasons, current designer generation seems to believe that cues to the past are better removed than respected.

Is it by alienating your current fanbase that your sales grows? Is it because you target another customer base that could be offended by the old design cues, that the sales grows? There are so many reasons why BMW might prosper, but I don't believe it's caused by their new landmark design.

The link you make between your net disposable cash and the appreciation of the qualities/looks of a car remain a mystery te me. I see it popping up as an argument in the fora now and then. Would be a nice Phd project for a master in psychology though.

Two tone looks nice, but I don't imagine many US buyers will be opting for the expensive paint. Only cars I really ever see two tone on is mainly Maybachs. Even most Rolls I've seen are a single shade.

That front end though still doesn't match the rest of the understated design from the sides and rear though.

yes, it has been like that for a while, although it appears it is getting worse. When I first started reading this forum more than a decade ago, there was plenty of people here bashing anything that bmw produced… At the time I thought it was the competition fanboys, or even competing companies, trying to dissuade people from buying bimmers. Now I believe there are also a lot of unhappy people on this forum who spend most of their lives moaning about anything. I can't imagine what their home-life is like! . For sure there are going to be designs that don't appeal to everyone, but BMW seems to be doing ok.
Anyway, I just try to ignore or laugh at their petty attempts to curry favour with their like-minded internet pals… sad really… but there you go, it takes all types in this pseudo-connected internet world.

Could also qualify as a Phd project: when you express negative appreciation for the recent BMW polarizing design, are you more prone for suicide or divorces?

Restating your post a bit more succinctly . . . If you don't agree with me, there must be something wrong with you.

Hating on everything is the culture now. Also, new generation don't come to these forums, those from older generation miss their younger years and all things associated with those years.

BMW's latest design moves have been a success by every available metric, but the toxic haters will never be satisfied.

BMW didn't own Rolls in the 1900's, lets not act like BMW invented two-tone paint

Well, let's go back to the original comment . . .

So Mercedes has sold more cars than BMW in four of the last five years. Last year, 2021, BMW did sell more cars than Merc - about 7% more.

Losing four out of five years and winning by 7% in one year could hardly be considered "knocking the socks off their lux competition" (by any available metric, as you'd say).

You guys do know that facts matter, right?
