G12 LCI Foam in Intake Boxes - Thoughts?

Folks - I was changing my filters today, cleaning them out, and BMW put these foam liners in the bottom of the intakes, I presume to catch water since the OEM intake hoses from the from the front grill.

I pulled my foam pads out, they were really detoriating and then cleaned out the entire box, vaccume, alcohol spray and wiped them all down. I ordered new airfilter foam sheet, 12"x12"x0.75" (non adhesive backing) to cut new ones and install the next time I do filters; wanted to let you all know if you have LCI G12, that your foam is probably deteriorating (I have a 2020) and not healthy, especially with the heat cycles.

Will cut them to match and put them back in next filter change, FCP Euro makes it free for oil, cabin and filters changes, just cant beat it.

Pic upload is not working on the forums, will show you once it works.https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/g76f9...1p14ok5bk&dl=0

Foam in the bottom of filter housing? Never seen these. Are you sure it's supposed to be there in the first place?

Yes, there is 3 BMW posts and clips that hold it in. For sure OEM, its foam under the removable filter.. you can see the 3 holes and there are posts that the clips hold it down.. Its not on Real OEM and I took them out, but maybe its an Alpina addition or something?

Okay, so just to get it right, this foam is installed inside the air filter housing, on the intake (dirty) side, before actual air filter?

I just cant see a function for these, but perhaps if I would see them assembled properly in their location, it would make sense.

Oh and what engine are we talking about anyway?

Correct, the foam is on the dirty side under the replaceable filter.

Huh, well I'll be damned. I still wonder what is the purpose of this foam over there.

I don't think it protects against water wading, but perhaps some sort of resonance dampening?
