2016 740i 15 mpg average 70% city 30% highway is it normal?

I purchased my 2016 CPO 740i with only 13.9K miles but I feel like my average mpg is too low (15mpg) even if I don't really care much about gas I'm worried that there may be something wrong with it

I have a 2016 750i xDrive and always get better mpg than this. The only way I'd be this low is when my only driving is city using Sport Plus mode, Sport Shifting, and a heavy foot on the gas pedal for fun. Under normal comfort plus driving when I'm on the highway (55mph) it gets 34 mpg, Interstate speeds (70+) are more around 29 mpg. Combined city and highway for normal driving using your ratio is in the lower mid 20s. Again, this is with the V8 which seems to do even slightly better than my daughter's 2012 528i xDrive, possibly due to the amount of work required on the 4 cyl to move the weight of the vehicle or something like that?

Please give your average MPH as well as your MPG. Having an indication of what your avg MPH is will help better understand the type of driving situation you're in vs 70% city/30% highway.

Some city/urban driving contains lots of timed lights on boulevards/parkways where your avg MPH can be higher than some city/urban scenarios where there's a lot more stop-n-go situations from block to block. The higher your avg MPH...the higher your avg MPG will be. If your city driving has a lot of stop-n-go and idling situations, then your avg MPH will be lower which will in turn affect your avg MPG. But without knowing what your avg MPH is...its all speculation.

Seems low for a 740i.

I have a 16 750i - I am an aggressive driver with a mix of stop and go / highway driving. My average for the last year has been consistent at 17.9mpg. When I take long trips, I can average 25mpg to 29mpg.

Are you completely stock? As others have said, how's your driving habits and is it all city or a mix?

I am on the exact same position I have the same amount of miles and same car exactly. I get around 17mpg in the city max - this is UK mpg not US So it would have to be converted but I’m pretty sure it’s still bad.... I drive really lightly as there isn’t really space to push the car with the occasional acceleration. I drive in a combination of comfort and sport but mainly comfort. My car is completely stock although I do have a drivetrain warning related to a misfire that comes and goes. Bmw is still investigating that but I doubt it’s related to my mpg. Also my average speed is around 19/20mph I believe

Misfiring could be caused by spark plugs, coil pack, bad injectors etc. that could definitely impact your fuel economy as your car may be running inefficiently.

The thing is, it’s very inconsistent it’s happened maybe 3/4 times over the 4 months of ownership and I’ve taken it into dealership. They’ve determined it’s a misfire but they don’t know what cylinder so they told me to drive it until it comes back to see if it gets logged onto system. Also a lot of vapour comes out of the exhaust on startup whilst idling. I get the error when I accelerate and the car shakes and is clearly misfiring. Then after I start it up again, it goes away for a long time,a month or two and everything is back to normal, like nothing happened.... sorry for hijacking the thread.... im just rly frustrated lolll

After driving an 840i for about a month and averaging about 15mpg I've decided that I'll never go back to the inline 6. These cars are heavy as hell and I feel like the 6 has to work too hard, hence the crappy mileage.

For reference I'm getting about 17 mpg in my 2019 750ix with 85% city driving.

Similar results here for a 2020 750ix. On a recent 170 mile (85 mi round trip), mostly but not all highway), the mpg was about 26. I had an inline 6 735 some years ago, and felt the engine was okay, but just barely. The 750 loafs at 80 mph.

Exactly right. I averaged about 27.5 mph on a trip from Chicago to Toronto a few months back. That's probably all that the 6 cylinder could realistically muster on the highway, but please correct me if I'm wrong 740i owners.

Well in my case for the las 900miles I averaged 15.5mpg and 23.9mph average, the only thing not stock on my car is 22" wheels but this should not affect this much the fuel efficiency right?

I myself did a 760 mile trip from jersey to North Carolina and back last week I averaged about 29 mpg in my18 750 but odd maybe just to me but I make this trip at least once every other month usually with my17 F15 which is a in-line 6 and hard to believe that my G12 gets better gas Mileage !! F15 gets only about 21 mpg

22s can and do effect you're fuel economy. Larger, heavier, and higher rolling resistance.

My 2016 750 gets better gas mileage than my daughter's 2012 528. And obviously the 750 is way more fun to drive too.

I would say that is low MPH for city/urban traffic. Hopefully more of your fellow 6 cylinder owners will also compare their average MPH (as well as their avg/MPG) so that you could see a fair comparison.

I have the n63TU V8 engine and 98% of my driving is city/urban...every-now-and-then I may get a chance to hit the freeway...and my AVG/MPH is 26.76 MPH (when my current total fill-ups for the year are calculated). You can see in the chart below that my avg/MPH & avg/MPG is higher than yours with the V8 engine...so perhaps there is something going on in your case. Even with a low avg/MPH I would assume that your avg/MPG would be a bit higher.

I get around 17mpg max (uk mpg) and I do mainly city driving with around 10% motorway. I drive quite economically too, average speed of around 20mph. On a full tank I will get around 400, sometimes 330 depending on city traffic, etc...

I definitely believe there is something going on with ur mileage. I as well am getting decent combined mpg.. about 18-20mpg with my mixed driving as of late. I hope you can get to the bottom of it. I had a jb4 on my E90 and read fault code that way. Maybe u can get some kind of obd2 reader to get the info vs trying to get the code when taking it to BMW. Suggestions for the OP on a code reader anyone?

I get 14.5 us mpg and I’m in the same situation with the same car, year and mileage. I don’t really think there’s anything wrong...Although I have an ongoing misfire problem so that could cause my problem.

I went ahead and grabbed a laptop and installed INSTA+ myself connected to the car and checked, the only thing I get is an IONIZER internal fault, every ecu on the car is green no messages not even memory so I'm assuming the last trip to the dealer erased any possible memory faults but that was over 2 weeks ago now

I was able to grab the same engine my car has on an X5 which is 500lb more and about 1mpg less efficient from factory but this one I got as a loaner with 100 miles so brand new, so at 22.9mph I'm getting 16.5mpg so in the end I don't think 15.x is not that bad for an almost 5 year old car
