+27 MPG....w/ an N63

So many threads on how "bad" the N63 engine is....

Well, here is a bit of sunshine....just did my 60K mile service:

1. Replaced the oil (0W-30)
2. Engine Air filters
3. BMW Spark plugs
4. Cleaned the MAF's
5. Replaced two of the intake seals at the throttle body
6. Cleaned the throttle body
7. Replaced the PVC hose assembly

....on my 2018 G12 N63, and this engine is awesome.

Ran around SoCal over the last week +800 miles and I'm averaging +27 MPG, 95% highway, 5% city, with plenty of hills and valleys (so not just tooling around at 55MPH on a level highway) and absolutely no vibration in the steering wheel...and this thing still pulls like a catapult.

....Just saying.

If you want the N63 to last, I would highly advise running Redline 5W50. I have had many cars with N63 variants (2011 F10 550, 2015 F10 M5, 2019 G12 750) and all ran Redline 5w50. I still have the F10 550 and it has 164k miles.

This is awesome.

The MPG with the B7 is the only reason that would keep me away in the future from the M760 G12. I don't want the car to cost me $5 gas each time I go to pick up groceries a few miles away. B7 V8 engine probably makes more sense despite the fun and exclusivity of the V12 in the M760.

If the V12 is what you want, don't sweat it. Those 5-10 minute trips in town to the grocery store are going to have your mileage firmly in the teens with either engine.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the relative efficiency I'm getting out the N63 in my 750, but I know it's propped up by the 60 mile of highway on my commute to work.

I already have the N63 on one my cars (X7 M50i) and I don't agree that it's that bad as far as city mileage (am getting close to 17 MPG or so).... I feel that the V12 won't even get me 12 MPG for the same daily home-work 15 miles trip that is all in-city through traffic lights, etc.

I don't follow that logic of expecting to get less than the EPA city rating with the V12, while expecting better than it with the V8...especially when with the X7 you average better than rated. Assuming your commute and driving style would be pretty much the same, you should expect a similar spread relative to the EPA's city test.

Just because I love numbers, I put some numbers to it: That X7 is rated at 15MPG (which is 6.67gal/100mi) on the EPA's City test cycle...If you're averaging 17MPG (5.88gal/100mi) based on your driving style and your own "city cycle" route of your commute, you're 11.8% (on gal/100mi basis) more efficient that EPA rating projected. Again, assuming all that changes is the vehicle you're driving, apply that same logic to the EPA's published city data for the B7 and M760 for the same model year, I estimate you'd average about 19MPG with the B7 and about 15 with the M760. On a percentage basis, it's a significant difference but both would still be labeled as "poor." My initial guess of both being in the teens holds water.

I don't know where you're located, but I'm in Ohio and the average cost of premium today is $3.989/gal. For comparison's sake that makes the cost of that 15 mile commute: $3.52 in the X7, $3.11 in the B7, and $4.06 in the M760.

I haven't tried to go that deep by doing the math, but thank u for doing it this is very useful. Honestly it was just the mental aspect that makes u think a car with 12-15 MPG avg is much worse gas wise than cars in the 16-20 mpg avg range. But, really, both are poor MPG wise I agree. I like the styling of the B7 better but I'd love the exclusivity and driving experience of the V12 in the M760.

If am worried about gas, I can just keep driving my Model S, lol, but that is not a factor when buying cars at this price point.

It can be - if you are a tool like me who loves engineering and efficiency. My 740dX long term average is 44mpg or 5.3l/100km. I could do better.

Yeah am only interested in the M760 for the exclusivity part as a car guy, otherwise I would not even think of it as the tech is NOT that great, seats are not the greatest comfort wise, and the gas mileage is really bad. In fact, if another year passes without finding a 180K+ MSRP M760 with all options, there will be a time when the new i7 might start showing up as pre-owned with sub 85K sale prices (just like the EQS now), and then that car would make more sense if am going to spend 60-79K adding another fun car to my garage.

I sold my Mbenz S-class with 158K MSRP a couple months ago, and that's the only reason am looking for another family-large-luxury sedan now. M760 is just the right replacement. Otherwise I have 2 SUVs and an awesome EV sedan and a bonus Honda car at home. So I am covered as for the "needs", and am just "hunting" for an exclusive car like the M760 for the fun aspect to tickle my OCD.
