Best "barrel" for Scotch
Port? Sherry? Plain oak? What's your favorite scotch barrel? I've been tempted to toss out some bucks for a good port barrel scotch. Is it worth it?

I think it depends on what kind of scotch you like. For me, I like Macallan, Glenrothes, etc, so I'd lean to a sherry cask.
But if you like something like Laphroig, then a toasted oak barrel might be better. |

LOL, nope, its the good stuff. Water of life.
What are your go-to scotches when you drink - I'm curious. Always looking to expand my horizons. Its funny, I always disliked the Lagavulin / Laphroig, etc type scotches...anything from Islay really as well, as I basically just felt it tasted like smoke with a strange medicinal finish...if one could call it that. But then my buddy (without consulting me naturally) got me a bottle of Laphroig for being a groomsman and while it was tough initially, by the end I wasn't minding it. And a month or two after, I actually ordered a glass in a restaurant because I felt like it. Still, my favourites lie in the Speyside region, I don't think I've tasted a scotch from there where I said "That's not for me". |

I'm a fan of the sherry barrel along with oak, and like Joekerr, most Speyside whisky's. For everyday consumption, I keep The Glenlivet on the bar. I also have Macallan, Glenfiddich, Balnevie and Carduh, all Speyside region. For guests I do have bottles of Lagavulin and Laphroaig from the Islay region...

My wife brought me home a Balvenie DoubleWood 12 which is awesome.
Keep the Glenlivet 12 in stock as a go to. |

Been drinking Glenlivet and I like it, but I'm thinking about splurging for a Balvenie. Torn between Port and Double Wood. Almost bought a small 3-bottle set at Heathrow that had port, sherry, and dw barrel samples (small bottles), but it worked out to about $50/shot and my cheap side couldn't abide by that.

Balvenie 17 in the peated cask. The 14 is also pretty good, they age that one in a rum cask.
Quick detour to bourbons, has anyone had the Black Maple Hill from the charred white oak cask? |

I usually keep Glenlivet in my bar, although I pretty much only drink it when I'm smoking a cigar and since I havent smoked in a loong time havent really been drinking it. I've tried some others but I always went back to Glenlivet.
If I'm not smoking I pretty much stick with bourbon. |

Anyone here use whiskey rocks? I make spheres out of distilled water but it's becoming a PITA or I'm becoming a drunk either way too tedious. |

Just bought some sphere molds. Couldn't get into the idea of soapstone in my scotch. The ziplock is a great idea. Have to remember that.

Ok so it's confirmed no rocks, wondered if they got cold enough.
I have two molds but my issue in a nutshell is the wifey's nephew who is living with us keeps using them for water. Kid is from Germany going to school here and simply does not understand not to touch my stuff so they are constantly gone or empty. That will be solved in 30 days when he goes home and I get my kitchen, fridge and freezer back. |
