740ix or 750ix?

Looking at possibly ordering a 2020 7 Series, have the colors and packages figured out, now onto the engine choices. Do most people that purchase (not lease) who plan to keep the vehicle around 6 years go with the inline 6? I am aware of some oil consumption issues with the V8, they are not overly concerning to me, but still something to consider. My '17 Audi S6 with the V8 was a blast to drive, but the 9mpg got a bit old. TLDR; is the $10,000 upcharge for the V8 worth it?

Before buying...you should drive the I6 and the V8 to see if one appeals to you or not...regardless if you are leasing or buying. Everyone's driving style is different...the I6 may provide you with enough power/performance to be satisfied...whereas to some...it may feel underpowered and the V8 is the only option for them.

You have to determine for yourself which engine works for you. And the V8's oil issues tend to be associated with the early renditions of the N63 (the N63TUB44O0)...BMW is now up to multiple engine upgrades since the debacle that caused them to recall those early engines.

It's true I6 could use a little more oomph but it's still pretty quick from 0-60 and great fuel economy for a big sedan.

I'd have to go for the 50i if the additional 10k isn't an issue, packs a lot more power/torque than the 40i, which even if you don't use it to the fullest extent will endow the car with an imperious feeling.

I have a 740 and the engine is extremely quiet and smooth. The power feels adequate, but not ground breaking. I think it fits the car's personality perfectly. A quiet, comfortable and relaxing drive.

If this is your only car and you need to fulfill an adrenaline rush get the 750; If you have alternative sports car to fulfill that rush don't bother with the 750 and get the 740. The bigger engine is only good for straight line acceleration because you cannot change the weight of the car.

I think if I were buying and intending to keep beyond the warranty, I would go with 740 and if leasing, 750. There is a difference to be sure (I had older 735 that I thought was underpowered but the newer engines are better).

It is maybe a bit more nose heavy with the larger power plant as well.

It will be my daily, I have two small children so no sports car in the garage right now. I'm actually cross shopping this against a Mercedes Benz AMG E63S wagon, and a Porsche Cayenne, as I haven't decided yet if I want to go back into a sedan with all the jacked up pickups driving around my area (Central TX).

If your budget allows for a 750, I suggest you go with that.

In that case go for the 750. The E63S Wagon is a beast of a car. It will hold its value a lot better than a G12 750. But if you lease the monthly payment will be much higher for the Mercedes compared to the BMW.

If buying get the E63s Wagon; If leasing get the 750.

As an almost half way house what about the 745e? close to 400hp with electric torque and will be as smooth as silk and help if mpg is a factor.

Trunk is small due to the battery pack, drove one and it was really nice, but cannot deal with the reduction in cargo space.

It really depends on your driving style. You will be fine with the 740ix and probably never really want for much more if you are not a super aggressive driver with a heavy foot. Our I6 Turbo in the X5 is enough to get it around fairly quickly, that car is a bit lighter than the 7 but the tune is also not as high as the 2020 740ix.

That being said the 750 is a different animal and its effortless. When I drive the x5 and the 7 back to back its a pretty stark difference between the two.

Especially if you compare the 740ix to the E63s, that car is a beast and will make the 740 look like its standing still, its almost 2 seconds faster to 60.

I am a fairly aggressive driver, which is why I'm not sure the 740ix will be enough (which is sort of a ridiculous statement that a 4.8 second 0-60 isn't enough, but I welcome the horsepower wars). I do also appreciate a vehicle that handles well, and wonder if the weight of the V8 may cause some issues in that department. I had an Audi S6 prior to my G01, and there was a lot of weight over the front end, which could not be disguised with a rear sport differential and rear biased quattro. It could be the front drive architecture of the A6 shining through, but I only kept that car 10 months, and was hoping to hang on to my next vehicle for longer.

You live in Texas my man. In Vancouver, Canada my brother pays $8.01/gallon for premium on a 750. Enjoy the reasonable operating cost of a V8 while you still can.

I came from a seized N63. I don't think BMW has proven track record with these turbo V8's yet. I would never own one outside the factory warranty again for damn sure. That's why I went with the 740i over 750i this time around.

I havent driven the 740 only the 750 so I cant comment on its handling my I6 was in the X5.

That being said I dont think the 750 handles well, and you definitely feel the front end push. As much as I like the power and the tech in this car it will be my last 7. They have strayed to far from the original formula for me. I kinda wish I bought the B6 instead but the tech being much older I was swayed by gadgets which I am normally not.

I imagine that the 740 will be much lighter in the front and hopefully handle better. I think the E63s wagon will handle much better.

I recently was faced with the same decision of 740 or 750. Having owned a 2014 750Li and MB S550, I thought the V8 was the way to go until I took a long drive in a 740i and thought it was one of the sweetest engines going. In fact I preferred it to the 750i and wound up leasing a 740 and am happy with the choice, it feels lighter in front and handles quite nicely for a lux sedan. In a practical sense, it has plenty enough power and is quiet. Of course, if you crave the thrust of the V8 go for it, but do test drive the six before deciding.
