Say what you want and make statements like, "It's for the Chinese market." They will sell a ton of these cars and break previous records and you guys will still be here spouting negative comments. Whether you like the new design or not, BMW will be here for a long time and new forum members will take your place when you have washed your hands of the brand.

BMW has joined that alternate universe where track suits are in fashion. These cars will age like fish. Add to that early generation battery technology and you're looking at the worse car purchases in history. BMW resale value will rival those of Jaguar and Aston Martin. Only people with more money than sense will buy these things.

I know... they think that by shitting on their heritage that they will scoop up the younger crowd that cares more about technology than the driving experience and traditional German aesthetics - but they are fooling themselves. Apple and other tech-native companies will get most of that market.

I would be selling my BMW stocks if I had any.

The people defending this atrocity are the types of suckers that BMW will sell these cars to and justify their design decisions.

It's becoming ever more clear that BMW is a company operated by its design dept.

If you're trying to market your cars to a higher end crowd (and vs — self/owner professed — higher end car makers — PORSCHE — cough!) I think you've gotta think outside the box. You want head turners so to speak. You want to be in Atlanta, The "Exotic-Car-I-Can't-Afford" Capital of America, or Miami/SoBe it's Spanish Cousin, and have gawkers asking each other "What kinda car was THAT!?". Some will be flummoxed with amazement, others will think they're hideous George Foreman's on wheels.

The point is, BMW is a rap video away from becoming mainstream cool again. Whatever constitutes that these days. (See e.g: Jay-Z/Beyoncé stumping for Tiffany in front of a Basquiat after LVMH took over; Lewis Hamilton in…gasp…Tommy Hilfiger; the popularity of the new Vette amongst certain segments of the younger set)

Don't get me wrong, I'm probably the biggest BMW hype man out there, but I don't see the excitement for ///M cars, outside of our wonderful community that is, for Bimmers that I do for other brands. I think Maseratis are FUGLY, but boy do they turn heads at valet. Teslas are aight, but when my cousin w 3 teslas got into our X5M Competition he was genuinely surprised with how far BMW had come. I think BMW has to attract a younger crowd of buyers. Look at the threads asking about age and marital status of BMW owners. I see a lot of guys in their 30s-40s. Whether we like it or not, their segment is aging…and buying Audis.

Admittedly this is a rather elitist (and quite possibly totally off base) view. But I'm getting the sense that BMW may be tired of being looked at, largely, as Ford's rich German cousin.
+1. The dinosaurs here with their outdated views will bankrupt the company in 2 weeks if they had their way. We ought to be glad we're still getting manual M cars at all. I for one like the new render, and don't mind getting an i7 if it looked like that. I'm 28 and not getting any younger and an i7 makes a lot of sense! People and so called eNtHusIaStS forget that BMW has to cater to more than one market and exclusively re-making manual brown E46 M3s 'preferably' as a wagon isn't going to keep them afloat.

The "dinosaurs" here aren't bitching about design decisions from competing brands like Porsche, Land Rover, Audi, or Mercedes (save for EQ line).

Ever care to think why?

Bahahaha. And you all thought the 4 series grill was bad. This is 10x worse.

edit : re dinosaurs and model lines - read this.

https://squelchdesign.com/featured/choice-paralysis/

Take a look at Tesla as an example. They have just 4 models, with extremely limited customization options, and most customers tend to go for the "all out" builds. They're selling like hotcakes.

Take a look at Ford's lineup. They have a grand total of 20 model lines, with a decent amount of customization within each, but their big primary seller is the F150 by far. Like, it's not even close, and it absolutely dominates all other brand's sales numbers for any given model except maybe if you compare it internationally to the Civic or something. For the US market though F150s sell at about a 3:1 rate over Civics.

BMW has about 19 models, with a plethora of trim lines to choose from within them, tons of customization options, etc...but it could well be spreading too thin at this point. The 3, 5, X3, and X5 are the clear standouts, selling at 4x or more other model numbers. Surprisingly, the X7 is close behind as well, selling nearly as well as the 5 series but lagging at 1/2 the rate of the X5 and 1/3 the rate of the X3.

So...yes, they actually COULD likely stay afloat by simply focusing on refining and catering to the few core demographics. The 7 series sold a total of 6,443 cars in 2020. For comparison, the 3 series sold 41,442 cars. The 5 series sold 26,785. Even the new 4 series with it's oh-so-ugly grill sold 9,495 cars. The only models that sold fewer than the 7 series were the Z4, i3, i8, and 6 series. Literally everything else sold more.

IMO, the people going for the oversize sedan still are more the dinosaurs - anyone who wants the extra space these days opts for an SUV or crossover, and in BMW's case it seems clear the 7 series buyers have shifted over to X5 / X7 models (X5 : 50,642; X7 : 20,579).

Having just a few choices that you execute really well on is a perfectly valid business decision. If BMW chopped the 2 series entirely, kept the 3/4/5, chopped the 7, kept the 8/8GC, I think they'd still do just fine as far as passenger cars go. Replace the 2 series with bringing back the 1 series for those who want the smaller compact cars, keep it at a 2 door coupe only option, even if they kept it only as an M1 coupe, and I think they'd be fine.

edit: disclaimer, I just woke up and caffeine is still kicking in, so if this sounds totally bonkers I may not be firing on all cylinders yet.

Does it even matter? Nobody has been choosing the 7 series over the S class for like.....20 years.

I actually thought the LCI looked pretty good...but it's been pretty meh besides (and I've owned a couple 7 series).

Typical Carwow clickbait, but yuck, everything here just looks discombobulated and distasteful.
