Wheel balancing oddness!

I thought I felt a certain slight shake or vibration at certain speeds in my seat so I took the car to my local garage to check the wheel balancing. The first strange thing was that found that all the wheels where out of balance, some more than others. The second strange thing was that after balancing them on the machine they found that one of the wheels required no weights at all. How unusual is that?

How does it drive now?

If you're asking whether it's unusual to have to rebalance tires as they age, the answer is its not. Especially low profile run flats.

It feels different but I still think I feel a slight vibration from the rear. The tyres look fairly new. So assuming they were balanced when replaced why would they all be off balance a few months later? What about one wheel not needing any weights at all?

How long had the car been standing before you purchased, as have seen vibrations for a while after standing for a few months - takes a bit of time to get the tyres perfectly round again. We have not seen it happen as much with Michelin, but more so with other brands.

I had a speed related vibration and noise issue with my first A8L, which felt like tyres. Audi replaced all wheels and tyres under warranty, and it came back a few k miles later - turned out to be propshaft bearing, which took 6 weeks to diagnose and fix - whilst they kept me in their A8’s.

Had been standing since February. The car has 18,000 miles on it but these are newish tyres. Is it possible that a wheel might need no weights?

We have seen cars needing different weights and moved around the wheel, but never really thought much about it. I would talk to a tyre retailer to see if they have seen that, as they will be the ones at the sharp end and will see far more than the main dealer.

If car was sitting for 3+ months the tire likely has flat spots. Drive it hard, heat up the tires.... And that should help eliminate the flat spots. Sometimes overinflating closer to tire oem max pressure for a few days is helpful to remove the flat spots.

No weight needed on a wheel is a best case scenario. I'd be grateful.

I have had the wheels balanced twice now and am fairly confident that they are now balanced correctly. However I still feel a certain very slight shake or vibration especially at lower speeds and particularly for the first few miles. I watched some video comparisons between the G11 and the S-Class and in several of them they referred to a slight 'shimmy' in the G11 and a less absorbent ride than the S-Class. Does anyone else experience this?
Is it possible that it's just a natural consequence of 20'' rims and low profile runflat tyres? I'm coming from 18'' non-runflats. Perhaps I should expect to feel more of the road?

I came from an Audi A8L with 20” and non run flats into the 7 series, and even with run flats the 7 is much better. I don’t get any noticeable shimmy at all - and I am picky about any noise, vibrations or harshness. I tried a 5 series as a demo for a couple of days, and it was jittery by comparison to the 7

Did they check wheels for runout issues? I. E. Being bent.

No they didn’t. But I don’t think they’re bent as they look fine and the vibration is very slight and only noticeable at certain times.
