The display key battery is rechargeable by Qi wireless or micro usb.

I do not think there is part no. available for the battery. But I also highly doubt the battery is manufactureed by BMW. If you could figure out how to open up the key, you might be able to get to the battery to see who manufactured it and then see if they could provide a new one. Since you say the key doesn't work (and I assume you are out of warranty), this may be your best option short of ordering a new key (which you would have to do through a dealer). If it is one of 2 keys you have, you could also simply order a cheaper non-display key. The phone app does almost everything the display key does except remote control parking.

This is the key..
Would it be possible to use a display, glass, or housing from another key to repair my current key?

Theorectically you could repair the key, IF (1) you could find another "donor" key (maybe ebay, maybe junk yard) and (2) you could open the donor key without damaging it and put it back together. There are no visible screws on mine, just what looks like a joint that would have to be pried open. Sort of like a cell phone that needs a plastic spudge. Since your key is already damaged you could try and see what happens. (I also don't know how the integrated circuits are arranged inside (for example, what is embedded in the screen and whether there is any damage to the circuitry now. If the key still works this should not be a concern). It would be a gamble to see about using a donor key. Safest is of course to get the dealer to replace , but that is going to be pricey. Or, if you don't have RC parking, just get another regular key if you need one.

if its not working, is the car still under warranty in which case can you get it fixed via that?
Guess it comes down to what is the reasonable expected life of the battery. |

Fortunately it still works and holds a charge for as long as 3 weeks or so. It is out of warranty, oow, by date and mileage. It's only the glass that is broken.. and the little loop to put on a keychain. Lost the 'simple' key as well somewhere in home. Was trying to find a way to repair this one vs buying a new one. Might just get the regular key.

Any thoughts on a key like this? Could it be a viable replacement or just for parts? |
