RFT works
Angry and amazed. Hit a pothole so hard it tore the side of my tire. No tools and no spare because the car uses Run Flat Tires. The same tires that are so special they need to be ordered. Why amazed? Wow - Run Flat technology works. Drove 30 miles at 45mph fine. Even did a couple of things and had lunch. I see the light of RFT.

I've gone through at least 10 tires (blew through my tire insurance in a year. Run flats are the worst. There is no compliance whatsoever. Do not get 21" wheels in NY.

I have 19's and just had all four wheels repaired under insurance. I cannot imagine 21s here.

I was surprised that a pothole tore the sidewall. It was maybe at 15 mph. Central Florida does not have that many potholes.
If not running RFT, then what? The freaking car does not even have a jack or tools or spare. |

It wasn't even a bad winter, all things considered, but the roads are crap. Some of the potholes are small craters. Looks like we were hit by meteors. No wonder there are no dinasaurs around.

If you swap the RFTs you can get a spare kit and a jack. There is an option for a spare. It takes up a lot of room but is a unit that can be removed.

I blew out a tire last weekend hitting a pothole as well. I was doing about 60mph and hit that thing HARD. I immediately lost all pressure and ended up having to drive about 25 miles back to where I had started. I had taken the car on a road trip that weekend and ended up having to leave the car there and go back to Anchorage to order a replacement. I went to a tire shop first and they said they only had a Toyo tire that would fit and that because of the AWD system, they can't put on a tire with mismatched tread or it might mess up the transmission. Anyway, I'm heading back down this week with a replacement tire and driving back slowly and carefully.
I'm definitely getting a separate set of 19" wheels and winter tires in the fall. |

Turns out that I hit that pothole so hard, I slightly bent the wheel (Style 648M). The tire shop was able to mount a replacement P Zero RFT on it and balance it. I've had the car up to about 70mph so far with no noticeable shaking in the steering wheel.
But now I'm debating whether to keep this setup or order a set of BBS CHR-II wheels and Michelin PS4's. I'm leaning towards just keeping the stock 20in. 648M's and Pirellis, but I'm not sure. I really like BBS wheels a lot, especially this one: Last edited by AKSteve; 04-03-2019 at 11:37 PM.. |
