Thank you! Yea bmw engineers come up with some pretty awesome designs n it definitely takes some dedication but I like to look at it as a learning experience as well. I figure this won’t be the last one I see!

Some feedback. I had my 750ixdrive in Bimmex here in Toronto
They replaced the valve seals, carried out the walnut blasting, and during the reassembly they replaced all cooling hoses on the engine and cleaned all the injectors ( which had already been replaced several years ago under the CCP)
The walnut blast was 2,000 Cdn $ Total cost for the engine work parts and labour 7800. My third party warranty covered 4,000 of the 7,800
Picked up the car yesterday. Drives absolutely like a new car. My guess is acceleration up by 30% and the engine much quieter Milage is 152,000 km or approx 90,000 miles Prior to the repair work my oil consumption was not that bad. One quart every 700-900 miles. Only had the blue smoke after long idle. BMW Toronto The dealer recommended a total engine replacement at cost of 22,000 c$. There is no class action suit up here unlike in the US. Hope this is useful

So I finally got it started after figuring out the rest of the wiring n the plumbing. It ran great up until it reached operating temp. Cylinder 4 started misfiring so I went home thinking the worst since that was the cylinder with the damage. I checked compression first thing this morning n to my surprise it was 140 psi (I would say that’s pretty damn good for a scratched cylinder with rings that haven’t even broken in yet). So I swapped injectors 3 n 4 then after reaching operating temp it started misfiring again but luckily this time on cylinder 3. So I ordered an injector which should be here Tuesday n it should be road ready again.

Damn wow I totally forgot to update this thread! My bad! But yea we got that injector replaced n it ran amazing. I found out some info about this vehicle, it was ran from Las Vegas back to Scottsdale with that bad injector which leaned out that cylinder enough to melt that piston. So I know they’re under a service bulletin by bmw so I would suggest anyone with these engines get theirs checked or replaced because it can cause some major damage n the misfire didn’t even feel horrible it would just set a check engine light.
I wish I had some pictures of it to post after it was all detailed the car was immaculate

Very impressive work, kudos to you. Not sure how you remembered which bolt went where without bag & tag. I'm so thankful I have a straight six BMW; they are bullet proof and easy to work on. That engine looked like a puzzle, a beautiful one at that.

Great work!

Nice job tearing down and rebuilding. You saved a good deal of money. In exchange, though, was a great deal of time and frustration. Next time just take it to a qualified autohaus and have them do the work. I had my e38 V8 rebuilt for $5000. Yes, it's a big chunk of cash, but given that I bought the car for $3000, I'm into it for about only $8000. That's cheaper than most used Camry's with the same mileage. Anyhow, kudos for your patience!

It wasn’t bad at all I rebuild all kinds of engines and personally love bmws. But I definitely was able to save the customer thousands by doing this instead of replacement. These engines cost anywhere around 5-8k used depending on mileage but we got everything done for $3500 ($1500 in parts $2000 in labor).
What engine is in your e38? What all did you have done to it? I’m doing a rebuild on another customer’s e60 with the n62b44 pretty soon, I was going to do a write up on that as well.

Correction -- I didn't have an e38 rebuilt, it was an e65 (2006 745i) with a 4.0L V8. I had an e38, but sold it after realizing too much work was needed. Wow, your price is pretty awesome. I wished I lived near you... I'd give you lots of business.. lol. As far as the work I had done, I had the valve stem seals replaced -- a common problem, as you know. That took about a week and $4000. Weeks later I had coolant leaking and took it back in, thinking it was an error on their part. Turns out it was a common problem that they didn't address during the rebuild. The cooling circulation pipe located in the top valley of the motor started to leak. They have me a break on the cost and charged me $1000. They had a special tool that saved them from tearing apart the engine again. Which I was ok with, but wished they had addressed it on the rebuild. Remember, this is California. $5000 was the absolute cheapest I could find. Most other places wanted $6000-$8000 for the job. The dealer wanted $10K+!
