for this part in bold, i'd say as a student of it, good luck finding them from a big 10 school that's almost world renown for coding. i'm not saying it doesn't exist but it's hard to come by

but yeah, in general i feel like the person i'm hiring/i'd like to be hired is someone i can invite out for a beer or two after work. not necessarily to become best buddies, but someone human enough that i wouldn't mind spending a few hours outside of work with. i can't exactly describe it, but you hopefully get what i mean

I know exactly what you mean! I spend far more time with my coworkers and employees than I do with my wife and friends. So yeah, not having a team full of dickheads is key to long term happiness!

I've met maybe 1-2 software engineers in my life that aren't socially awkward. They were never mean, disrespectful, or anything like that. Just the quiet nerds.

Which is fine with me, I usually go to the PMs from my questions.

oh you've been lucky i'll tell you that
socially awkward, sure it's tolerable definitely not the worst thing, but some of these kids are just arrogant and the textbook definition of "thinking they're hot shit"

People with that kind of attitude either don't get hired in the first place at our office, or their services are no longer needed once management figures out they are.

We are a small office, so being a dick get's noticed very quickly. Of the 50 or so people in our office, only 6 aren't either Software/front end developers or Tech Writers.

I could tell a few of my ex wife stories of some of the crazies she got hooked up with.

She didn't listen to my advice about the first guy, so I just withheld her from having my daughter for visitation while she was with him.

But once she figured it out for herself and tried to get rid of him.....it resulted in about 8-10 slashed vehicle tires, and a gas tank full of sugar even after a restraining order was put in place.

Wow this thread derailed...

On the original topic, many years ago I had a girl that I worked with, and she wasn't exactly undesirable, at least at first, and we dated for a little bit. Ended it, and although she was a bit upset, seemed to get over it. The job was seasonal, so before long we did not even see each other, and lived quite a ways apart.

Months later, she reached out and wanted to hang out again, and I mistakenly agreed. She came over to mine once or twice to hang out, and then started asking if she could use my address to register for her next semester of school, which I denied. Then she tried to leave toothbrush and hair stuff in the bathroom. As I was starting to see the need to cut her out again, she showed up at the house when I was at work, and asked my roommate if she could come in, and leave some stuff in my room. After I got that call, I had to tell her that she had crossed the boundary, and needed to stay away.
For the most part it worked, she called me a few times over the next year or two, then I moved and changed phone numbers, and never heard from her again. Luckily this was all pre-social media, so I never had any worries in that respect.

I'll wait for details (soon to be) on the dating thread.

She sounds like a keeper! At least she is showing initiative.

My Attorney had to do a series of meetings in Chicago and asked me to speak at a function in his place. I said yes and he connected me with the event coordinator. Before I met her, he said in passing..."don't be surprised if she asks you out because you're exactly what she likes." Wait wut?!?!!

Fast forward 48 hrs which is Monday of this week. She calls me and asks if I could help her bring in a couple of more sponsors to which I said, "yes". I make some calls, get a few more, pick up the paperwork and a couple of cases of wine donated by the local cigar shop. I ask her how she wants to handle the transfer and I told her to meet me either at my office, my attorney's office, or a local coffee shop at 11 on yesterday. We agree to coffee at 11. She calls me again and tells me that the schedule is changed and asks if we can meet at Ruth's Chris and do the paperwork exchange at that point. I say, sure.

I get there and she is dressed for a date...completely dolled up. I'm in a pair of chinos. I order a glass of tea, take two sips and make an excuse to leave. Last night after 11 PM she texts me again about having a proper drink and dinner. I don't answer. This morning she calls at 6:30 and I don't answer. I finally called her back and stuck to nothing but business. If I hadn't committed to speak, I'd bail right now. It's disconcerting.

Lol she doesn't seem to care she's not your type, it's just about what she wants. Whether or not you like her, completely irrelevant.
