Another Used Car Market Thread

Two things to talk about here.

One, if you haven't seen the below resource before, and are keeping your thumb on the pulse for used car prices, it's about as objective as it gets. Its purely data driven, no human intervention.

https://www.copilotsearch.com/index-report-02-2023/

Second, taking the above into consideration, how much more can a 125K MSRP car really go down in value? I'm shopping a 2016 with 93K miles right now and it's priced aggressively at 28K. The above report states that things are, on average, still 30% above what they "should be". But is this segment kind of isolated from all that? Because of the high MSRPs and the significant lack of demand? Plus, 7-series are notoriously known for tanking in value FAST, does this also contribute to the current market? For me, I don't need the car now or even in the next year, I just want it as a second vehicle/toy. Is waiting another 6 months going to do anything as the used market appears to be cooling off (albeit very slow)? Like could a car like this really sell for a mere 20K once the market corrects itself?

Sorry, I know this is a tough one and the above is a bit of a long read. Curious to see if there are other pricing nerds out there who like to really understand market dynamics.

In Finland I bought 2017 with 86500 km. Bmw 740Le xdrive. The price 50k ÄÖ I think thatís a lot but thatís because itís Finland.. in other countries in Europe it is cheaper. Etc in Lithuania the same equipment + - km price 38-40k Ä.
In Germany I believe itís even more cheaper.

Id say that $28k for G11/12 that is not trashed is a bargain, at least in Europe.

Current state of used car market kind of reflects what has happened with that COVID spending spree. People had some money to spend and because new car market was constricted, used car market got inflated. Even now with all the monetary tightening that is going on, you dont see the prices go down dramatically.

What is more important to consider is the knock on effect of couple years worth of slowdown in new car production. If we usually have a steady onstream on used cars to the market once the two, three, four ..... you name it, lease contracts end up, then in couple of years this influx of used cars is going to drop as people just haven't got their hands on new cars. This can have a significant impact on the prices as the supply is dwindling. Also, depending on which direction the world economies go, people might hold on to their existing cars for longer, exaggerating the situation even further.

This is just and educated guess based on current prognosis and might go completely the other way, depending on many factors.

Thanks both, this helps. I'm unfortunately going to be waiting a bit longer as the car I wanted sold!

Bought a pre-owned 2016 750i xDrive

I was under a similar conundrum, wanted to buy a 7 series as a toy, since I didn't need it. Came across a beautifully kept 750i, that was run 93k kms(~58k miles) selling for 39k CAD(29k USD). It may be worth mentioning that it didn't come with an executive package, or the long wheelbase.
However, I purchased it 10 days and has been an absolute pleasure to drive. The 4.4L V8(as notorious as it may be) has been a pleasure to drive, and the raw power just puts a grin on my face end to end whenever I take it for a spin on an open road

Adding a few pictures of the same!

Any idea how's the price difference between G11 / G12 -models?

Here in Finland the SWB (G11) outsold the LWB (G12) due our ridiculous car taxation policies, thus G12 are more rare and have quite significant premium over G11.

Same goes with xDrive and Rear Wheel Drive -> xDrive adds pricing via Co2 emissions -> thus many of these (G11 & G12) here are RWD only -> xDrive adds premium even at the 2nd hand market.

Contrary to the majority of the world, due emission taxation, here the "e" -models are by far the cheapest to buy. For example LCI 750i will cost much, much, MUCH more than 745e.

At Jan 2022 I paid 55k euros ($ 58k US) for literally fully loaded 2018 740Le xDrive with 92k km / 57k miles. Every factory option except Merino Leather and M-Sport. Instead it has extended Nappa leather and "Pure Excellence Exterior" packet.

And just few hours south of Finland, in Estonia, 750i's are the cheapest of the bunch because no one want's that gas guzzler. M760's on the other hand, these go for a pretty penny. No actually scratch that. They are listed for a pretty penny but stock doesn't really seem to move much. 30d, 40d and 40i are most popular models and in standard wheelbase. It doesn't seem like much, but oh how you can feel a difference in corners between regular and L model.
