2016 750i tuning recommendation

I should have investigated this further before buying a Burger JB4 N63tu tuner. I did not realise my 2016 750i was speed limited to just over 130mph. I never installed the Burger tuner due to other priorities so now I am looking for another answer from ECU flashers. I am not looking for anything that will compromise the excellent daily driver sophistication of the great N63 motor. This car gets nearly 28.5 MPG on the highway using the cruise. What I do want is the speed limiter removed and more full throttle performance without reliability problems. Any suggestions from those with experience??

I currently have a stage 1 tune on my G12 750i. It's a night and day difference over stock.

Increased HP from 450HP to 580HP per the tuner. I personally haven't dyno tested to find out but the car is no joke.

Increased throttle response in all modes

Almost no turbo lag

Speed limit removed

Maintained stock drivability

Maintained stock fuel efficiency

I personally drive mixed highway and city, I am averaging 17.9mpg which is what I was getting before the tune. On long highway trips I got 28-29mpg.

I highly recommend a tune over a piggy back any day. The piggy back increases boost and forces the cars system to adjust fuel/air/timing/ignition which sometimes isn't as efficient as sometimes the system maxes out and can no longer adjust. A tune on the other hand adjusts all the parameters to accommodate the additional power. The car will run more efficiently, better power, and most reliable.

I am running the tune from DME tuning. They are very popular in the BMW world. I had their stage 3 tune in my F10 M5 for roughly 50k miles before selling. My buddy has 100k miles on his tuner car.

The g12 7 isn't really a popular platform to mod so you don't see a lot of tuned 7s. Hard to understand how reliable a tuned G12 is. Not many with high mikes either. That's why personally went with a stage 1. It's perfectly balanced and not pushing the internals too hard.

Thanks for the reply. Did you do yours with the mail order tune through the OBD port?? 2nd question: Does this flash have a provision to return to the stock tune if you are going in for dealer service?

Yes, they did remote tuning. It was easy and didn't take too long to do. 30-45 minutes maybe in total.

Once he loads the software on your system, he can show you how to return it back to stock if needed. It's a 15 minute process to flip between stock and tune.

Personally, I've never switched back to stock for routine maintenance or minor warranty issues. Never on any of my BMWs. They only check when there is a major issue. Even then, it's not detectable during basic diagnosis.

Thanks so much for your input it was very helpful. Although my car is a 2016 I came over here because I didn't find any info on the forum for the 2016 + cars. I am going to sell my Burger JB4 N63tuf. which was never installed and still in the box. I will be going the same way you did with the stage 1 tune. Again thanks

Ordered the D M E stage 1 tune today from Autotalent which saved me a considerable amount with coupon code over ordering direct from D M E. Thanks again for the advice. This is my first BMW so I needed some experienced help. Not new to HP cars as I have a 960 WHP Corvette but the BMW HP world was completely new to me.

Bad ass ... let me know what you think once you're tuned. It will be night and day did.

I agree, totally different cars.

did you install a cat delete downpipe on any of your BMW's and if so what did you see as far as improved performance? Just curious

I went ahead and ordered the cat delete down pipes and will be ordering the stage 2 tuning upgrade from DME. Not sure how much additional performance I will get but nothing ventured nothing gained. Should be interesting. I am going to install the stage 2 tune first and later install the cat delete pipes to see how much each contributes.

It's my understanding to achieve stage 2 power you'll need to go with downpipes. I imagine what Mo may be doing is tuning it for stock cats and then after downpipes, retune it for catless setup. It's a good increase over stage 1. Post videos once you do. I'm contemplating it.

I sent a e-mail to Mo asking if I could install the downpipes first and then tune later to see what the effect each individually would have. He replied that the pipes alone would cause the car to throw a code. He says they can configure the stage 2 tune for the catless downpipes. Still waiting on the downpipes which are scheduled for shipment the end of this month. I never did get an answer from Mo on whether the stage 1 tune had enough flex to allow for the downpipes (except that it would throw a code). He did not recommend going to a colder plug for the stage 2 tune, just change them every 8000 miles.

DME Tuning is having Black Friday Sale at 20% off all tuning from now until 12/4. You can get another 5% off if you order through Auto Talent.

I have been exceedingly happy with the DME stage 1 tune. Performance is outstanding and the fuel efficiency is same as stock. I have put 1,120 miles on the car since the tune which is all in town (secondary roads and expressway) and the car is averaging 21.6 MPG.

Glad to hear that. I took advantage of the Black Friday Sale and ordered Stage I for my '16 750 as well, but won't get done for another week. I wonder how DME Tuning achieves engine output similar to Alpina B7 (600/590) without resorting to new pistons, turbos, intercoolers, etc. Just curious, since DT doesn't publish details, at what RPM does the peak torque occur, judging by the sports display?

Increased boost for sure. I didn't get any detailed information when I asked. My mileage may not be typical. I don't drive aggressively around town, but when I want to firewall it I do. One short run from 70 to over 160 MPH took place on a empty expressway early one morning. I say over 160 because although the speedometer stops there the RPM continued to climb.

Code it to the alpina display and remove the alpina logo. Increases to 200.

Increased boost is the easiest way to make power on these cars. Increase boost paired with air/fuel/timing/ignition so the car runs efficient.

Alpina changed the components to ensure proper cooling and turbo efficiencies but mostly to maintain long term reliability. Increased boost creates heat and heat in turn without proper cooling will increase IATs and pull timing. You lose power. I imagine if we were to do a couple head to head pulls between a tuned 750 and an alpina you'll find the alpina will run cooler and maintain more power.

I used BimmerCode iOS app with ENET / Ethernet to Lightning adapter. BimmerCode has the option to change the display and remove the logo amongst other things.

Here is the full list of options available.

what he said--just beware that if you had enabled Carplay via 3rd-party coding, it would need to be reverted back to the default state; otherwise, Bimmercode could not access the HU (head-unit module) which controls the instrument panel. You can re-code the Carplay after BC is done. Kind of a hassle, but it was a decision BC made.

Interesting. Mine was coded and didn't have that issue. Using ENET or BT?

Both--when I purchased BC 1.5 years ago it worked fine. BC updated the app this past summer such that HU-NBT module was no longer accessible if the car had 3rd-party coding, citing some customers had complained about errors. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't allow you to revert to an earlier version of the app, either. Here is the quote from BC:

"The headunit has to be in its original state. If you used a third party solution to enable CarPlay or the navigation has been unlocked, these changes have to be reverted, because BimmerCode will not allow coding the headunit otherwise. Retrofitted iDrive systems may also not be accessible under certain circumstances."
