2010 750xi Transmission. Thoughts??

I have 6k miles on a new 2010 750xi.

In general I love the car and its features.

However, I am a little less than thrilled with the transmission.

I am transtioning from a 2007 530xi which I loved. Really loved.

I believe that was a six speed automatic and this is an 8 speed automatic.

Here is my issue. I wonder if anyone else has the same experience.

There seems to be an awful lot of shifting going on very quickly. Too much.

If the car has so much torque why not use it.

This is in standard mode.

In sport mode it is somewhat better, but still it feels jumpy.

I am not sure what is causing this and as my pedal feel has gotten better I have learned how to get the car to do what I want, kind of.

I am sure they went to 8 speeds to gain fuel economy, but did they put them too close together?? Just curious.

I thought the automatic on my old 5 was PERFECT.

I want that feel back again. I am going to test the new 5, but I am told that may have an 8 speed as well.

If the automatic on the new 5 is not like the old 5 I am going to move to a stick shift.

Is it just me or is anyone else experiencing a sense that "there just is something not quite right" with the automatic on the 750xi??

the 750xi is no different, it has the same six speed in the regular 750i/Li
the 760i/Li is the one with the 8-speed, along with the new f10 5er

also to answer you question, yes I had that same problem with my 09 750Li

Ah, you are right. I was misinformed.

I wonder why that 6 speed automatic is not quite right. Did you ever find the answer. Was that why you changed? Do you know if the new F10 5 Series has the same problem??

Your M is manual no doubt so hard to compare.

I cannot add any value to your question, however, I think the 2010 has the 8-speed, while the 2009 had the 6-speed. I'm sure someone will correct me, if I'm wrong.

Actually the 2010 model also has the six speed. Only the 760 and the AH7 have the 8-speed on the 7er line.

The 8-speed will not even be available in the 2011 until mid-year. I've driven the 550i Gran Turismo which has the 8-speed and it is much smoother off the line though it's also busier as it shifts through 3-4 gears in the 0-20 MPH range.

@LLepard: Did you buy this car new or did it have a previous owner?

If you bought it new, did you brake the car in as per the user manual?

Reason I am asking is because the car 'learns' your driving behavior and will adjust the throttle response and shift points over time accordingly. If you bring it back to the dealer, they can reset the computer to factory defaults and the car will start to learn your behavior again. I had it done as I liked the original response of the car when I first got it, but because of the brake in period, the car sort of took it 'easy' as it figured that's the way I always drive and would like to drive it in the future. After the reset, the car was definitely more responsive again. Maybe you should go and talk to someone at your dealer (preferably the shop foreman or someone that works on the F01/F02 series cars!).

Thank you, that is very helpful. I will try that. I did baby it during break in.

Also, it is made more confusing because my wife drives it too and she does drive slowly. So the car is probably very confused.

Having said all of that, i am driving it more in sport mode and find that solves most of the problem. It is a very interesting problem. Sometimes there. Sometimes not. In particular it is worst between 10 and 30 miles per hour. It is almost as though the car is set to have a constant RPM and will keep shifting no matter what. To keep the RPM at 1600 or so.

I could be mistaken but I think the profiles may be different for the two keys you get so if your wife uses say the second key when she drives the car, then the profiles should differ. I know everything else gets saved in the profiles but I'm not sure about the engine/transmission settings...

I have 2010 750Li and same issues. I hate the shifting and jumpy feel. about to drive me nuts.
