'15 Alpina B7 vs. '17 750i

Hey all. Haven't posted in a while. I sold my '16 750 back in March. I'm considering getting another 7. I loved my last car and it treated me well. For about the same money I can get a 2015 B7 or a 2017 750 with similar mileage.

Purely from a driving dynamics standpoint which one will be a more fun driver?

Reliability?

I assume the 2017 gets a leg up on tech with CarPlay. Any other considerations?

I will run snows on separate wheels in either case in case that would be a concern.

Appreciate the thoughts of this group.

My budget is around $45k tops.

It’s tough to use reliability on a BMW website as criteria.

I think Alpinas are true special cars for all sorts of reasons.

Hahaha. I know it all too well.

I guess my concern is N63 TU vs. N63 TU2

2015 B7 will definitely drive better. Both are not the most reliable vehicles after 50k miles with that V8 engine.

Kinda what I figured. Might go for a big SUV instead this time around and sick some cash away for the B7 in the future.

Haha.

My primary issue is that I don't want to get into someone's deferred maintenance headache. I know stuff goes wrong. I can live with that. I just don't want to have to plow $5k into something to get it up to baseline. I have an '01 E39 for that.

I’ve had two 2001 e38’s. Might have been my favorite cars ever, but far from the most reliable. I just don’t get people who want to talk about reliability with German cars. It’s so easy - you want a car with spirit, buy German. You want reliable but soulless, buy Japanese. We all know this is the deal.

It's true. I'm not looking for reliability necessarily. Only the more reliable between the two. I'm a BMW guy…I know what I'm getting into. Just wondering if the scales tip one way or the other. I want the B7. I'm ok with maintenance and the occasional "well it's a BMW" repair. I suppose it's all down to how the previous owner took care of it.

We'll see what happens. My wife is on the SUV/truck train.

I would go for the B7 for that extra exclusivity factor.

Having driven both and gone from one to the other side by side, I chose a 2018 750ii xDrive with 19,000 miles over a 2019 B7 with 29,000 miles. They are both awesome cars. The B7 is pretty sweet, but it wasn’t worth the extra $38,000 dollars to me. Would it have been worth an extra $15,000 for the exclusivity to me? Perhaps. Additionally, my BMW service department manager said the reliability was equal in his experience.

In the UK we say if you want a car with spirit buy an Aston martin or Ferrari, if you want reliable but soulless buy German and if you've given up on life buy a Nissan.

On serious note I've never had a BMW let me down over 13 of them over 20 years and over 750,000 miles, I've never experienced their unreliability.

Really? From my experience most people will tell you to get a Toyota or Lexus if you want reliability, lately Kia and Hyundai, most people would tell you to avoid BMW or pretty much any other German car for some reason. I had 2 E39's before 525i and 530d, never had a single issue with them, a F13 640 not a single issue, can't say anything about my newly(used) G11 though.. had it for almost 2 months and it's been in a garage for 2 weeks now, waiting for them to fix the air suspension, I am really considering giving up on it, did it ever happen to you to hate a car that you just bought? :/

I didn't say Japanese cars weren't reliable just boring in general, I always get new cars and I've never been let down but I make sure they are run properly and treated well (others don't hence you can buy a used car and be surprised as its been abused before you got it).

One exception to that rule of new cars was my first 7 series and I regretted it as it wasn't right something was off with it so I sold it on after 12 months. (you always run that risk when buying used)

The only car I've ever bought that I didn't like was an F31 335d xdrive perfectly reliable just not my cup of tea.

You can only speak as you find and I've always found my BMWs to be reliable, I've got a 14 year old Z4C on drive that I've owned since new and its still going strong.

I'm not joking about this, I think you should drop whatever you are doing and go play the lotto right now as you have to be the luckiest man on earth.
It's either that or all of your bmws were low mileage?

My big sedan dreams were smashed for the time being.

Appreciate all the input!

We settled on a 2015 MB GL550. I'm pretty excited about it. I would have liked to go X7 but the prices haven't come down at all yet with the market the way it is. Family sized rocket ship that can tow. Should be fun!
