Not to mention the traffic jam at the Panama Canal for cargo coming from China and the Pacific rim.

On this subject, I vaguely recall reading last year that the bay in Tampa is extremely shallow and difficult to navigate for ships. Plus, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge at the entrance has only 180 feet of clearance. For comparison, the Bayonne NJ bridge has 217 feet, the Verrazano has 228 feet at the mouth of NY Harbor, and the Golden Gate has 220 feet of clearance at the entry of the San Francisco and Oakland ports. Anyway, I suspect that the offer by Florida was grandstanding.

I have been amazed that the Navy chose Philadelphia as a ship yard, as the Delaware is shallow in that area and the Navy has to take the tops off of tall ships like Aircraft Carriers before they will fit under some of the bridges leading out to the Chesapeake Bay.

Interesting story - I was on the very last cruise by NCL out of the Philly Cruise Terminal...and we were stuck (grounded) for a few hours right off of the pier and had to wait until the tide came in to finish the last few thousand feet of our cruise. None of the current mainstream cruise lines have ships that can fit into Philadelphia, because they all have monster-sized ships these days. NCL had sold the ship that we sailed on, and was turning it over to its new owners as soon as we disembarked.....

I'm sure you're right about the grandstanding....

I will say, we stopped and watched a cruise ship leave under the Skyway and mannnnnn it looked like you could hop right off the bridge onto a bar stool without cracking a tailbone. It is shocking how close these things look from land

So question, if the freebies have or are drying up, how are people surviving that don't want to work? I don't get it.

Federal freebies may be ending; however, individual states may continue offering various forms of assistance. Still, to your point, I don’t get it either.

A lot of people are/have retired, and many of them are retiring early. Anyone with PBGC rate DB pensions that have a lump-sum option is likely to retire this year if eligible, this includes many early retirement (before 62 typically). This is because the PBGC rate is the discount rate used to determine the lump sum (PV of annuity), and that rate will certainly rise next year. So someone contemplating retirement now who decides to work another year may go backwards or work for free, effectively.

For others of retirement capability, the stress of work and the COVID environment has pushed them over the edge and they want out. That is the Great Resignation.

These retirees mean their jobs are open, so others are moving up, creating additional resignations and cascading openings.

Then at the bottom of the work pyramid, people who have been in service and restaurant jobs realized just how much crap they were taking for little pay, and many used their time during lockdown to change companies/careers. They are at the bottom of that cascade I mention above, but they are not going back to their old jobs/careers.

Finally there is a group that moved back in with parents and is still figuring it all out.

That’s just a sketch of it, I’m sure there is a lot more to it.

Maybe its because I don't live in a large metropolitan area, but I don't know anyone who is still unemployed because of covid, or that didn't go back to work once they were able to. I ask my friends and they all say the same thing. Asking the gf if businesses back home (I'm overseas) are struggling with staff and shes says it's not any worse than it was before covid. Again, maybe that's because I live in in a town of 18k people out in the sticks and we aren't lazy, but I don't see the shortage in workers like the media claims.

Lee Valley sent out this email other day. More than ever see it, like it, BUY IT.

Dear Customer,

This time last year, I wrote an email to convey our uncertainty about what the fall would look like. This year, we have a much better idea of what to expect, as the hangover from COVID-19 continues to disrupt the economy.

We are now seeing lead times for some products that exceed one year, if our order even gets accepted – and not all do. International shipping continues to be an issue, with unprecedented backlogs throughout the supply chain, and costs that are several times what they were pre-COVID.

You can expect to see some supply shortages through the fall season and can count on many prices increasing. Most industries are also facing labor shortages (we’re hiring too!), and this will affect the ability to handle spikes in volume or deliver services on a timely basis.

Within the next few weeks, we will be releasing our Christmas catalog, which is uncomfortably early for us. Again this year, we are recommending that you shop as early as possible, as we will not have the opportunity to replenish inventory before Christmas. For those who shop in-store, we also recommend ordering online and picking up in-store – that way, you know the products you need are waiting for you, and it helps us ensure that we can serve you as quickly as possible, at the time of your choosing.

I would also like to take this time to thank you all for your patience, understanding and support over the past year – it has made a real difference to our staff during trying times.

Cheers,

Robin C. Lee

It's not media man, it's mental. I am hiring state wide across Michigan, Indiana and kansas, work from home, paid training, $350 bonus if you stay 3 months, no sales, mostly political polling, totally flexible hours (day, night etc), hourly wage ($14), no sales or gimmicks or silliness and I cannot find a fucking soul.

I suspect that many of the above went into the "gig economy" as independent contractors, where they can live the millennial dream of setting their own work hours driving for Uber, Door Dash, etc.....

To give you guys some idea, we had 114 people in Michigan fill out an application form, as in fully fill out and complete. The wages and bonuses are mentioned in the ad so it's not like they were suddenly surprised or anything.

Of those 114, only 7 completed the training and 3 of the 7 have quit already.

Exactly. I assume that it is for his call center, and also assume that the four who remained are only there because they are unemployable.

Personally, I'd explore the options in the lucrative field of french fries before taking a call center job.....

Interesting read this morning. I didn't think to copy the link at the time, now I need to go back and find where I read the article.

Bottom line, it blamed the Longshoremen's union for this shit show bottle neck. It seems they are behind not wanting to allow owner operators in the port. They feel they should be classified as employees and obviously forced to be union drivers. They are also refusing to allow the ports to use any kind of automated system to unload the container at the port.

I'll see if I can find it.

I want to give you guys a warning on tires - because thats a big one... there were no fronts on tirerack for an m2 for either the pss or the ps4... arrivals were into November.

If we have tire or gas shortage, I genuinely think we are kind of fukd.

I actually ordered and received my winter wheel set up before I ordered my 2022 X6 back in June. I wasn't taking a chance on getting stuck without snows.
