Engine warm up time

Been very concerned about how fast my engine warms up from a cold start. Been very vocal about this to the dealer and they claim everything is normal.

I beg to differ. I timed it and it takes 2.5 minutes to get up to full operating temperature.

Has anyone noticed their N63TU warms up scary fast?

Noticed this on 2016 750i I picked up a couple thousand miles ago. Much faster to mid-temp than 435i or ‘09 Z4 I had prior.

Do I think it’s accurate? Maybe not but it also doesn’t show high temps. I think it’s got a lower temp threshold for the digital display to show that its warm.

Haven’t had heat on yet with this car either...

Garage List
Probably designed that way to maximize fuel efficiency. Especially during summer I would expect a fairly quick reaching of operating temperature. As long as the temperature does not go above normal, what's the problem?

my 750 also warms up much faster than my previous vehicles (Lexus and Acura); I attribute it to 1) the active shutter, which BMW claims help shorten warm-up time; and 2) the tremendous amount of heat generated by the turbocharged "hot-v" V8. I haven't timed it, but my impression is that it's up to operating temp within two minutes.

These engines have been know to run hot. Not to mention all the problems the previous generations had. Anyone that owned an F01 you would remember BMW's CCP (recall) on the N63.

I'm genuinely concerned.

I took the plastic cover off mine to let it breathe more.

Its the tremendous amount of heat that has me concerned.

I wholeheartedly agree with you--my garage gets real toasty after each drive. Taking the plastic cover off doesn't help that much--most of the heat is trapped by the hood. That's why these vehicles are prone to short battery life because the car keeps running the cooling fan after shut-offs. I have never owned a car with THREE batteries before.

Bringing my M6 in service tomorrow. I will review this video with them and expect some answers.

You don't want to get stuck with a problem motors after your warranty expires.

Just got back from the dealer and they said that gauge is coolant temperature not oil temperature.

That's a relief.

This car still runs very hot.

I can't tell which BMW model you have nor which instrument cluster...but you should be able to tell what gauge you have by the icon located within the gauge.

The old gen BMWs like my e38/e39/e53...the smaller gauge on the far right of the instrument cluster was a "coolant" gauge. But the new gen BMWs that went back to the 4 gauge clusters (f01/f10/f01/f13/f15/etc) that had either the 6WA or 6WB instrument clusters...the gauge on the far right became the "oil" temperature gauge.

Again, you can tell what the gauge represents by looking at the icon. If it has rippled waves with a thermometer...its a coolant gauge. If it has an oil container/vessel with a thermometer...then its an oil temperature gauge.

You can see examples of each type of gauge below (coolant & oil temp gauges) that would represent my 2006 e53 and 2013 F06 GC:

If you want to see what the actual oil temperature is you can do so via the hidden menu. ( haven't got the link to it but I posted how to do it on the 5 series g30 forum here)
That will enable you to see both coolant and oil temperature at the same time and you will see that the oil temperature follows the coolant as the car warms up.
The active shutters will be closed as well during that stage to help the car warm up and get to operating temperature.

I noticed that the vehicle heats up really quickly as well (2016 G12). I have only had it about a week. I put OBDMX+ on there and the vehicle coolant temp showed middle of the road, but the OBDMX+ showed it near redline around 220*F. Thought that was pretty strange. I will have to check and make sure it is apples to apples coolant to coolant and not oil to coolant comparison.

Sorry...can't help but post a photo. My new baby...love this thing.

No CarPlay. Is it worth it?

That's a personal question only you can answer.
The good news is that it can be had for much less than what BMW charges, as long as your vehicle has updated SW.

Warm engines produce less particulate matter and pollution. The quick warm up is intentional.

Seems to make sense. I had a 2010 E61 wagon N54 before this. Biggest advice I got from two different indys that I trust was let it warm up really well to reduce strain on the turbos. That thing took a seeming eternity to warm up. Shortening that time to me would reduce strain turbos in N63 if you believe in the initial line of thinking.

Also, did confirm that the car shows mid-heat rating and OBDMX+ shows it near red line. So our engine must just run hot in general.
