G11 newbie question on service...

Hi all-
Long time lurker first time poster.

I purchased a 2018 740iX back in March with only 22,000 miles. Since then, I managed to put only 2,000 miles on the car (thanks to Covid, etc).

Regarding servicing the car - I assume you always go by what the computer says - NOT how much you drive, amount of miles, etc?

I guess what I am saying, I figure to be under the pretense that you should change the oil in your car at least once a year. Or at least it is not a bad thing to do.

I guess since my last BMW was a 1994 3-series, I am just not up to par with the sophistication of the technology of a 2018 7-series.

Thanks for any comments!

With all my BMWs including the Ms I went with what the computer recommends for oil changes and mileage (maintenance intervals) for most other maintenance items like transmission, brakes, filters etc since the dates in the idrive are just dates set by the BMW mechanic as reminders.

Changing oil more frequently than "recommended" is never a bad idea. You can get the oil changed once a year during your free service period (not sure yours has expired), regardless of mileage. It cannot do any harm, and the dealer may pick up other issues that can be addressed under warranty. In NY we need a safety inspection every year, so it is convenient to do an oil change at that time. I brought mine in in October at 12 months ownership and less than 4000 miles. Dealer picked up a small leak in a tire valve stem and replaced it before it could do any harm.

I had an E61 wagon which is a twin turbo 6. I'm not sure if it is the same engine (N54) as what is in the 740. I now have the twin turbo 8 in my 750. Given BMW history with twin turbo engines I change the oil more frequently than the computer says. About every 5-7000 miles.

This could be complete horseshit but as the oil ages I figure it's viscosity decreases which would place additional stress on the turbos. For that reason I theorize that changing it more frequently diminishes that stress by replenishing oil with thicker viscosity which is a better lubricant.

Turbo stress is also decreased by letting the vehicles warm up properly before driving.

I'm sure there are people smarter than me that will either agree or disagree. I guess I just do it because I've always done it at this point. I figure it can't hurt and over the long run won't cost me much more money.
