Advice for buying used

Hi all just wanted your feedback on a vehicle im considering. Wanted to know what your thoughts are on buying a g11 (750i) that has 72k miles on it. Am I going to be buying a money pit or should I be fine buying one with this amount of miles? Any feedback would help a ton.

Pre-purchase inspections are your friend. Find a good/reliable local mechanic to go through the car. Also would be good to look at warranties, as even parts can be pricey. Mixed bag in terms of reliability, but generally the engine is very good, it is all the other tech that seems to have a higher failure rate.

What year for 72,000 miles? If it were me, I'd be very hesitant. As noted above, not so much about the drivetrain but the electronics, turbos, suspension components, etc. Anybody can do engine repairs or brake jobs, but these cars are computers on wheels that don't run right unless the computer modules are working and they, as a practical matter, have to be replaced rather than repaired if there is problem and that can get very expensive. I would want to make friends with an independent who has the right diagnostic equipment (but good independents are not cheap either). Not sure about what kind of warranty could be gotten on a car with 72,000 mi, and likely would be expensive and not cover electronics.

Its being sold as is. Hes telling me there is no problem with the car and the year is 2016. Not sure if that is counted as one of the newer n63 variants.

There was another upgrade to the N63TU in 2018 I believe.

I believe N63 was updated. There was also a recall campaign on the turbos. Are there service records for you to see? Telling you that "there is no problem with the car" is meaningless especially with an "as is" sale. If it were me, I would walk, if not run, away from this.

I will give you good advice - If you do not have a proven model from a trusted person without specific warranty protection, then just run away as far as possible, because it is a ticking bomb with exorbitant repair costs.

The joy of owning will not ease the cost of being kept.

I would definitely look at getting a BMW warranty with the car if possible. Costs of getting hidden issues resolved will quickly make it worth while.

I agree - how much is the asking price for the 16 with 72K miles. I'm thinking of selling my 16 with 52K

It shouldn't become a money pit if you make a calculated purchase.

As stated above, a pre-purchase inspection is always a good idea. So is getting the vehicle's full history (BMW service logs).

Also, ask to take it on an extended test drive where parking, local, and highway driving is involved. Make sure you know the options the vehicle has and be sure to test it all out.

If everything seems in order, then with proper maintenance, you should be able to drive it for a long time.

Also, in my personal opinion, buying new and having the car depreciate in value year-over-year is more of the money pit.

Case in point: I bought a high-mileage 2013 750iX with a $98,576 window sticker for $17,500 with oil and brake fluid the only expenses so far. The previous owner would make weekly trips from Philly to Maryland, serviced every 10K at same BMW Dealer, did all extended maintenance (new coils, plugs, etc.) and only had the windshield replaced due to a crack. I know all this because of a mix of service records, Carfax history, pre-purchase inspection and dealer information. Safe to say it was a steal and I used all the savings towards upgrading my garage to house my "new" car.

And to think my wife asked me to buy a new car because it is "worry-free". No thanks. I just press on my accelerator and all my worries flee.
