Are runflats really bad?
So I just realized after my Michigan road trip that my car is shod with non- run flat Pirelli all seasons. Maybe thats why I like the ride and handling so much?
But throughout my F10 ownership I always had the universally despised Goodyear runflats. I've always bought the Michelin AS3+ for my wife's Audi and have been very happy with them. But she has a spare. So my question is, should I switch to the Michelin MS4 Runflats or keep the pirellis with the option of replacing with Michelin AS 4s on wear out. 90% of my driving is in the city and I'm never really far from home. Also, I have w&t insurance that pays for flatbed and rental. I am planning to take a road trip to North Carolina in August. All warranties and roadside services still intact. Or just bite the bad ride bullet for RFTs. Maybe just get the slime kit and fuggedaboutit?

I've been a devout Michelin PS4S fan. My F10 had them and my 997 has the Super Sports.
I was going to replace the Pirelli PZeros with Michelin PS4S and I got a flat over a weekend one day and I couldn't get it replaced same day (the rears were special order) so I settled for Bridgestone Potenza RE980AS and very happy so far (which now I have spare like new rears in my garage). Similar characteristics as PS4S and very low road noise. Now if I were to try to hustle this thing around turns, at the limit, it may not be as good, but all around highway and enthusiastic commute driving, so far so good. So to answer your question, non run flats are OK in my book. Carry a fix a flat can.... if you get a pinch flat like I did, it is irrelevant.

I carry the following items in my trunk - BMW Mobility Kit (Tire Inflator & Slime) - fits perfectly in the first aid compartment. I use this as a last resort as its messy on the inner tire and wheel. - Boulder Tire Repair Kit - this kit is heavy duty compared to the shit you get at autozone which I do not recommend. If I get a nail and the tire will not keep air, I use this kit to plug the tire and allows me to get to a tire shop or BMW. It's saved me so many time's. Used it in all my cars that had no spares. Easy to do but will have to get your hands dirty. It takes me 10 minutes tops to do the plug and then inflate. https://www.amazon.com/Boulder-Tools.../dp/B01E635PGA

Two for two. I guess I'm keeping the Pirellis for now will likely swap for Michelin non RFTs after 10k more miles or so.
Will be ordering both those kits, thank you for the suggestions! Don't think the regular slime kit will fit the first aid compartment. Thanks guys! |

Hi,
I've put Pirelli P Zero Luxury Run Flat on my car and ... especially in the summer I think they are Ok and not huge difference vs. non-runflat. Two points for your consideration: - the 7 series is coming from the factory with Run-Flat tires, so the suspension is already a bit softer to compensate the stiffness of the runf-flats - the run-flat is safer than a normal tire .... Best M |
