I hope it will take place under the hood of the next 6 series!
On the other hand, its power is not so impressive if we take into account that Alpina needs only 2 turbos (also 3l i6) for 257kW..
How is possible to not have a proper gearbox to match the potential performances of the engine?
Audi has a very impressive engine in their SQ7 TDI...

This is probably going to cost almost as much as the M5, just like the M550d did

Great news, sounds like it will be an amazing engine.

Still, it's great to see this kind of engineering.
If you look at how many parts are in a single turbo motor, or even a NA motor; so many things can still go wrong. There is a better chance of another part of this engine to fail before the 4 turbo chargers.

It has led to at least one country in Europe to ponder a move away from diesels, after studies have shown there could be a correlation between widespread diesel adoption and increases in certain forms of cancer. France was the country with some of the highest percentage of diesel market share, and for years they have incentivized diesel cars - that may change drastically in the near future.

Stay tuned.

Anticlimax

All that complexity for a few more horses and few more lbs/ft?

I somehow expected power north of 400 and torque above 650.

Seems to me that diesel engine is the new evolution of a "fast car".. Correct me if Im wrong but the majority of diesel cars always have crazy torque. When accelerating and "drag racing", that would obviously beat a petrol engine with similar hp while we havea lower torque right? I thought petrol engines have a bigger explosive effect

And they probably always will. A diesel emits more NOx and more fine particles.
But then again they emit less CO2 than gasoline engines. So it's always a trade off: less global warming or less air pollution.
High compression means high efficiency but also more NOx
I also think the production of diesel requires less energy/resources than the production of gasoline.

No thanks. The only I6 from BMW that interests me is the naturally aspirated kind. Anything else from them seems to be a reliability coin-toss that more often than not lands on 'tails'. Whatever happened to BMW producing a car that you could depend on AFTER the warranty period?

No.
It will be introduced on the all new M550d xDrive and then filter to the X5 and X6 M50d and the M750d.
They are also looking at the possibility of an X3/X4 model using this engine.
They will be M Performance vehicles.

The US will get the M Performance PHEV M550e.

The 640d looked a bit sad compared to the M550d, it would be cool to see a 650d or M650d come out next (maybe G chassis is likely instead of F06/12/13)

The hp/tq is not much better than the current M550D. why add another turbo if your not getting better performance or am I missing something?

Good news. When will we see this engine in the X5 M50d? I'm about to order a new one to replace my 2014 M50d and if it is within a year I might wait.

Exactly. Four turbos, when BMW can't even make one last longer than 50k miles? No thanks.

What's better than 2 turbos? Obviously 4!

The new, top-of-the-line 3.0-liter i-6 will be fitted in the 750d xDrive..... On the road it translates into a 0-60 mph time of around 4.5 seconds
Not too shabby.
