Will be available in all models during 2016 starting with the 7 series then filtering through the X models! Also as for reliability there shouldn't be any problems as current engines have had no major issues and 4 turbos is a step forward so everybody can rest assured all is good

I'm glad BMW has gone the turbo route. Keeps me from ever considering another BMW and saves me money

This is gonna sound crazy, but BMW needs to sell this engine to Ram trucks. I would love to have this engine in a Ram eco diesel. The current Fiat diesel engine is such garbage.
Seriously, is BMW getting in to pick-up production? Missed that memo.

You must be joking. I see you're from the UK. Please google "N47 timing chain".

Problems with the N47 as you refer to is the 4 cylinder Diesel engines but as for the 6 cylinder engines there bullet proof! I've done many hundreds of thousands of miles without a single problem so don't see any worries.

Not at all. Diesels do not rev high and as a result, have longer gearing. The net result is less torque.

Don't confuse or rather compare these peak numbers with another engine without looking at the verbal curve and gearing.

I think this progress is logical!

Like most projects within the automotive industry today, this is probably driven by cost reduction.

BMW already has 3 cyl 1.5l and 6 cyl 3.0l diesel engines in production. These engines, together with the 4 cylinder versions already share many common parts.

When they now developed a new high power output model of the 6 cylinder version they basically developed two parallell dual-stage turbocharging systems (i.e. cyl 1-3 feeds one small and large turbine and cyl 4-6 feeds the other two).

It's nothing strange that a system with 4 turbochargers that can be used on different engines (with higher volumes) will be cheaper in total than a system with 3 turbochargers for one single engine (with relatively low volumes).

I would expect that we will see a 3 cyl 1.5l diesel producing 200 hp and 400 Nm, or more, in the next 3 Series or maybe already in the next 5 Series (G30).

The development have already been done, but for the 6 cylinder version!

That would be a beast. A little smack in the face to the SQ5 (the diesel, non-US model I mean). Obviously Audi is not going to (not able to) put their V8 in any Q5.

The US will get the M Performance PHEV M550e.
Don't you mean "M550e iPerformance M Performance"? Since all plug-in vehicles are branded "iPerformance" now.
