So, it's goodbye to the B7

As I wrote in another thread, it was an itch that had to be scratched. I had looked at and test driven an F01 B7 (supercharged) but it was a little rough and a little too old for my comfort level. Later I found the G12 just a few hours away, pristine with almost 7K miles on it, and despite the outrageous price I went for it. I've always wanted one of those.

It is a fabulous car, just scrumptious with all of the premium leather and fancy optional doo-dads, but I tired of the 4-wheel steering (hated it on the highway) and the somewhat crazy B&O system and the bipolar transmission. Not to mention the mind-of-its-own air suspension and all of the extended warranty programs that mysteriously included every 7 series made except for mine.

A lucky confluence of events including a dealer-ordered M550i on the way, not reserved for anyone, a coupon from BMW from doing the Ultimate Drive and the military discount along with the BMW CCA rebate and a small yet generous discount from my dealer (I'm a good customer) and the the B7 got traded in yesterday. I'll miss it for sure, but I'm also appreciating the slightly more responsive V8 in the 5, shorter body that allows me to get around it in the garage, the warranty and more exciting chassis response. And the warranty.

I wish these darn cars came with a spare like the good old days.

I will add though that the ACC/lane keeping works a heck of a lot better on the 2023 than it did on the 2018.

Congrats, both beautiful cars. Warranty is always a strong decider to switch over unless you're buying extended for your current car. Have been considering the G30 for the wife myself, incase we get large nostrils on the next 5. Was very impressed with a 540i that I had autocrossed at a BMW event.

Enjoy the 5, in many ways its all the car anyone will ever need.Onwards and forward I say!

Congratulations! What did you not like about the four-wheel steering on the highway?

At slow speeds, the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction, shortening the turning radius. That's awesome.

On the highway, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the fronts, so the car kind of crabs over. I did not like that. It makes the car feel unsettled to me, and gave me a feeling of vertigo.

Thanks!

I just got mine and really love the small turning radius. I haven't done much highway driving yet but will watch out for that.
