Not at all, they've had that nickname forever. M3/4/5. The 4-door E36 M3 was hugely popular though it came along after the coupe. For some strange reason a 4-door E46 didn't follow it. Closest thing was the ZHP package on the E46.

The 4 door would have out sold the coupe had it been available the full range vs the two years it was sold here in the US.

I would think the clearer way to express it would be M3/4 5-speed.
