Best Gasoline to Avoid Carbon Buildup?
Additives aside, Top Tier Gasoline list aside, who makes the best gasoline to avoid carbon buildup?

I've always used Shell 91 or BP 92/93. Never used any injector cleaners for my BMWs, except once. I poured Lucas in my last car (535i), it didn't react very well to it. Since then, never again. Don't break what's not even broken. Just avoid cheap sketchy gas places that offer gummed up "premium" fuel.
If you gas up at top tier gas stations, no need to waste your money. Injector Cleaners are mostly marketing BS. Too much detergent and you'll stir up dirt on the bottom of your fuel tank, which then clogs your in-tank fuel filter. Not cheap replacement for BMW. A lot of the guys who found an improvement with fuel additives has the same story: They gas at cheap places, their car runs like crap, pour in injector cleaner with better gas, and it runs perfect. Perhaps the fix was better (top tier and high octane) gas the whole time. Last edited by JNoSol; 03-19-2014 at 05:25 PM.. |

I buy fresh gas from places that move a lot of it. Most often this is Costco. My local Costco gets deliveries EVERYDAY. They sell a lot of gas and I NEVER have fuel problems.
Personally I go with stations that move a lot of premium gas and I don't worry too much about brand. |

I honestly thought it would be a gimmick, but I filled my car with a "generic" brand instead my usual brand, and my fuel economy went down and there was a noticeable vibration when idle, so I went back to Shell. I have always had really good luck with Shell in all of German engines.

The owners manual says BP. I've been using BP almost exclusively for the past 18 years, other than during some testing (see below).
Shell is the absolute worst gas you can get. The additives cause knock. I've been working with DiabloSport for the past 7 years, and done tons of logging and testing, on multiple different types of motors; Naturally Aspirated, Supercharged, Turbocharged, Port injected, Direct injected, Pushrod, OHC, etc. Shell will almost always cause knock, while other good fuels don't. Since the base fuel is the same, the only explanation is the additives. Cleaners don't burn, and apparently Shell's additive package has too much of them. I'd rather have some carbon on the backs of my valves than a hole in the top of my piston. Seemingly, Shells chemists don't agree. |
