G11 Tyres Q

Hello gents,
I'm new to the forum but this one seems to be very active and I quite like the posts and the will to help others.
I got my G11 740d x drive 2018 2 months ago and my tyres are 245 40 20 on fronts and 275 35 20 on rears all RF. Is it a must to stick to RF same sizes or I can get standard tyres ?
For winter tyres can I go 245 40 20 all around in standard ?
No idea if it affects the X drive hence my question.
Coming from an S400 2017 with same sizes and was ok with all around in 245 40 20.
Asked my local dealer and they said I must stick to OEM tyres which are Bridgestones - the ones I do not like at all.
Need some real user advice please.
Many thanks

I’m pretty sure that the recommendation on 20s is to stick with the staggered sizes, it’s just on the 19 and 18” option where same size front and rear is OK.

Worth getting a second set of wheels if you can, keeps the summers in better condition and if you buy right (ie from Germany not a UK dealer), then it won’t be more expensive than sourcing 20” winter tyres.

Oh ok. Thanks. Got it. Any pointers where I could get a set of wheels in Germany? Fleabay ? or any other online shops.

I would go for 18" or maybe 19" for winter tires. And not RF. When you get new summer tyres skip the RF as well. You will most probably get more comfort, better handling and less road noice. The RF:s are just more expensive. And of course you don't have to stick with Bridgestone if you don't like them. For example, here in Sweden they deliver the 7-series on Pirelli... When I bought new tyres for my old 7-series I went for the ones with lowest dB.

Morning. Thanks.
I do not like RF tyres. Had them on my S class and they're rubbish. I am still confused why BMW is not giving a clear answer if I can actually replace RF with standard tyres.

You must have not considered even typing a google search about ditching run flat tires. This topic has been discussed to death on every BMW forum that I'm on where the vehicles came with them.

The biggest issue you'll have is...what to do in case you have a flat. If your car came with RF tires...then you probably don't have a spare. So if you ditch the RFs, you'll need to have a back up plan in case you get a flat.

Do you purchase a compact spareor do you go full size spare? Do you take your chances with a BMW tire mobility kit (an air compressor that also has a canister of BMW sealant)? Or will you just take your chances and place your fate in the hands of a roadside assistance service? Or perhaps you do a combination of all or some of the above?

BMW won't recommend anything other than their set up, why would they? So they will say RFT and * rated in the sizes they delivered the car on.

Running a 245 section on the rear rim will give a stretch to the tyre and probably not sensible either.

Xdrive can give issues when you change the rolling radius so watch out for that if you change to another tyre, tyres that have the same sizes can have a different shape and width so they are not all equal just based on the raw sizing data.

Plenty of people ditch the run flats on x-drive with zero issues but you're not going to get BMW to recommend it.

It's a case of DYOR.

Actually I have looked around. Some say it's ok some say not. I found out today that the xDrive system is a bit sensitive if we change the OEM ratios so yes the chances of affecting it are very high. In terms of back-up I have free rescue from BMW and my Insurance but I am aware of the lost time/stress etc - point taken . Thanks again!

Had a call from my local dealer this afternoon saying they have RF tyres for my car : full set fitted for £1450 which is silly high. Pirelli Sottos 3 are £680 + £60 fitting therefore BM is charging double.
Thanks for your help and advice

One thing to consider when ordering tyres. Always check production date of the tyre. Sometimes you get quite old ones. I don't buy if they are older than one year.

In regards to the X-drive and tire/tyre size...see the info below about tyre exchange for X-Drive (AWD)...there is a little room for variance. You can run tire sizes through a tire size calculator (just google for one...there are plentiful on the internet)...and that can help select tires that are compatible if the numbers are slightly different. Plus there are already the BMW recommended sizes in your owners manual.

They only thing you need to take into account is that BMW Assist may say they will not help you (tow you away) if you have a flat tyre if it was factory fitted with RF tyres.

So you need to make a story around it if it happens.

My 20" winters and 21" summers are non-RF only. And haven driven my car initially with RF tyres for me it was quite OK. In contrary to the RF's on the F10. That was a disaster.

I had my second flat tyre in 20 years a few weeks ago. Thanks to our dear lord I was around the corner of my detailer who coincidentally had my winters laying around. So with 0.4 bar I drove up this shop. Close one..

Yep that's a lot, I just had my rears changed £500 inc fitting for 20" 275 bridgestone RFT as per the factory.

If the Sottos are the same spec and 1/2 price then it might be worth it, I have used non * spec winters on most of my BMWs but never on xdrive ones, but plenty of people do so it's down to you.

There must be loads of North Amercian based users who have though?

20” BMW winters are pretty rare in the UK so much more expensive than 19”, it was cheaper to get used 19s with nearly new tyres than a set of 20” winters, then there’s the cost of swapping the tyres. I bought the standard 7 series M Sport wheel, so they look right and it saves my summer wheels from salted roads which is a nice bonus.

I paid £460 for 20” rears recently, not too bad really and I also decided to stick with the standard Bridgestone RFTs
