The ride on 20’’ rims.

What Car in their G11 road test said

‘ Potholes and manhole covers can send a bit of a thud through the car, and the 7 Series has a habit of picking up on other surface imperfections, especially around town, where a subtle shimmy ripples through the car. So far, every 7 Series we’ve driven has worn chunky 20in wheels; hopefully things should be more cushioned with smaller 18in and 19in rims.’

I have to agree. There is a fairly constant but only very slight shake to be felt in the seat. I put it down to run flat tyres and 20’’ rims. Does anyone else experience the same?

I am running the 18’ wheels and haven’t test driven any others but the ride is amazing, especially in comfort and comfort plus. In sport it gets just a little firmer but still comfortable and doesn’t really make a big deal of any imperfections in the road.

19”

Very silky, yet controlled. Silent too, but that might be because of the insulation modifications for the 2020. I keep it in “adaptive” mode. Slightly too “floaty” in “comfort.”

I'm running 678Ms with 20" Michelin PS4S and the ride is smooth and beautiful. Handles the road very well. Much softer and quieter ride compared to the 19" Run flats.

Non run flats

I’d like to try the non run flats. Will do that at replacement time. Does parts sell a doughnut type temp spare? Is there a hidden location for that in the trunk? Thx.

The run-flat tires that came with my car gave it a horrible ride. And I blew one out hitting a pothole a month or so after I got the car. The tires still "ran flat" so I made it home, but I've never experienced anything like that with a standard tire. The run-flats make every pothole feel like it's going to knock the fillings out of your teeth. They were awful and I hate them.

I have Michelin PS4S tires on my car now and they make the car drive and feel the way it should. Run-flat tires are a compromise no one asked for. BMW used to give you a full sized spare rim with the standard tire on it and it was tucked away in the bottom of the trunk. I'm sure they could still do this, but they want to save some bucks and so they give us crap tires.

So swapping over to regular tyres like the Michellins should make all the difference?

What size wheels do you have?

My car came with the 20" M-Sport staggered set-up. Style 648.

My car is currently on a set of 20" BBS wheels. Here: https://www.7post.com/forums/showpos...4&postcount=13

So do you reckon the problem is the run flats not the size of the wheel?

Garage List
I'm a bit of a 'princess' when it comes to ride quality and hate a harsh ride like that in an M sport stiffened car (my wife's 4 series for example)...I have 18" rims on my 16 reg 730d (non M-Sport trim) and even with RFT it is fine. A few factors combine to give a feeling of comfort or not in my view:

1) RFT or non...Non RFT are definitely better for road noise, comfort of ride and if you go Michelin PS4's then they are universally praised but are hard to get and you need to consider what you'll do if you get a puncture or flat.

2) rim size and therefore the associated sidewall height of the tire...the bigger the rim, the shorter the sidewall and therefore also less potential ability to absorb any impact which can affect comfort. On 18" rims I'm on a 50 sidewall, whereas on a 20" rim I think you're going to have a 35 sidewall as an example (certainly shorter than 50).

3) air suspension setting: of course comfort is fine to help ride quality but it is quite boat like and wallows from body roll so adaptive or sports may really bring out any harshness if you have larger rims.

4) personal preference: some love to have it harsh, lowered, massive rims and M-Sport aggressive looks...others, like myself have 'sensitive bottoms' so want to be cosseted along the harsh UK roads without grimacing or going 'ouch' each time one goes over a bad stretch of road...personal preference will be a massive subjective feature in this discussion as some find an M5 comfortable for ride quality while others balk at even the 7's air suspension and 19" M-Sport RFT typical configuration...so YMMV greatly.

Hope this helps. My post is not meant to be a divisive one but it may bring out the very personal polarised views on this topic.

I have 20's on mine.

40 sidewall at the front and 35 at the rear.

I'm currently on BMW Bridgestone RFT. However I am contemplating switching to a normal tyre as the RFT are a lot more expensive for some makes. I'm CDO about tyres (as well as most things) and comfort, noise, wet grip & economy are the biggest factors for me deciding tyres. But I also generally stick to premium brands as those 4 contact patches are what keeps you on the road.

Having said that this is what I'm currently looking at for tyres. They're RFT but seem to have a lower rolling resistance and lower noise rating than most non-RFT tyres in the sizes I need.

That all depends on if the car was ordered with a spare or not if it was then there is a storage compartments under the floor in the trunk i ordered mine with the spare only because I remember catching a blow out one day with the run flats in my f02 and I also remember having to wait on the side of the road for three hours waiting on Bmw roadside !!! Me the wife and my four kids !!! One of the worst days the wife and kids together think they put a few greys in the beard that day !!!😂

Continental Premium Contact 6 are available now for the 7 series (20'') and seem to be mopping up all the awards. I too want to get away from Run Flats but the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S don't seem to do as well on the stats. These Contis are going to be my next purchase :-)
