The F10 M5 review

Figuring that the F10 boards are somewhat quiet, I'm going to post my review of an M5 here as well.

If you haven't driven one in a bit, I bet you'd love it, and I feel as if it may have been a benchmark for the G80 M3.

Great review. I've been noticing/paying attention more to F10's (both M and non M's) around town and find that they have aged extremely well, they are very elegant in design (sans the hood-line) and honestly I think I like them more than the G30/F90.

That being said, this M5 was always going to be a hard follow up to E60 and its tremendous V10. What the E60 lacks in beauty compared to F10, it makes up for with character in strides (and poor reliability ). The problem with the F10 is in my opinion the V8. BMW TTV8's are fast, but they lack character, and most of all, a proper soundtrack. I think both Audi and Mercedes do better in this department compared to the S63.

100% agree. The engine is a masterpiece but is so quiet it might as well be a 7 Series. The Blackwing is a great example of having obscene power with character.

Agreed this is a forgotten car despite not even being that old. I just don't think it made an impression on buyers like the E39 and E60 did. The F10 was one of the first BMWs to have very numb EPS which is something even the M5 version got consistently criticized for.

I do like how the design was pretty classic BMW. With the F generation they went back to the cleaner pre-Bangle design ethos.

I'm pretty sure the F10 M5 and F06/12/13 M6s were the last M models to have hydraulic power steering. Nevertheless, it is still very numb especially when set to comfort mode. In Sport Plus it is a bit artificially heavy, but at least you get feedback unlike most of the newer models. Sport is the sweet spot, and where I drive at 99% of the time.

Also I should point out, these were the last M5s available with a 6spd manual.

Correct, the synthetic feel is due to the fact that its not just any hydraulic steering unit but rather a "Servotronic" Hydraulic design which allows for adjustment in weighting, power assist, etc.
