Rear seat entertainment and iPhone

Anyone try using the lightning port to hdmi adapter and plugging into the rear seat entertainment to stream movies directly from an iPhone? Does this work? I saw a few people had hooked up an Apple TV by using a power inverter, but I was wondering if the hdmi adapter would work directly from an iPhone.

Thanks!

Thanks! Good news. I thought the only way to make iPhones/iPads work was going to be through The Apple TV route. Good to hear this works just as well and won't require me to use the WiFi hotspot in the car.

It is possible to watch, when the car is parked, on the front screen whats on HDMI or Bluray player in the rear? Or is the front not connected to the rear screens/inputs?

I heard the lightning to hdmi doesn't work because of hdcp protocol issues

I emailed Bmw genius and they told me they don't know if it works or not. They told me to go to a dealership and try it out. So much for genius...

In the meantime I've found out that you don't have access from the front screen to the rear inputs (HDMI + Bluray). Those are working only in the rear.

Can anything be put on the front screen as a source? Was thinking about switching to an Apple TV and getting screen mirroring

Apple lightning to HDMI adapter
HDMI cable

Connected to the RSE HDMI input= iphone/ipad mirroring on Rear screens

bit dumb pics as I had the iphone connected to hdmi and also used it to take the pics

It works & does as advertised, mirrors phone/ipad content to the RSE screens,

Thank you very much for the confirmation!

I read somewhere (I don't remember where) that some apps are not working. I've still some time to test myself as I'm waiting for the 2019 LCI to order one.

Maybe you're confusing this with Apple Carplay on the front screen which is only compatible with a few apps. Through HDMI on the back, no Carplay, just HDMI screen mirroring and all apps work fine, Netflix, Youtube, streaming, etc..

See pics of Iphone 8 through HDMI & playing Netflix.

Great! Thank you!

Now I've a little more than a year to hire a chauffeur, so I can enjoy it from the rear seat!

I just bought this cable and it works well. No need to use BMW's expensive data plan. Stream anything you want directly from your phone to the rear entertainment system.

Cheers

Hi!

if anybody figures out how to play video on all 3 screens (front and back 2 RSE) at same time with DVD or USB. please please let us know. currently i have coded my car. but cannot play same video on all 3 screens at same time. i don't mind paying if anybody has figured this out. i know in Europe they have TV tuner and Live tv is able to play same stream on all 3 screens. but cannot figure out how to play DVD or USB or HDMI on all 3 screens simultaneously. As far as I know there is no ******ion between front and rear. As I've written some posts earlier.

Live TV is the only way to watch the same on all 3 screens.

Is this a standard HDMI cable that you have with the lightning adapter?
