740i Insane MPG

I've regularly seen mpg in the high 30's which is insane for a car this size. Doesn't lack power either. I have to get gas maybe once a month, such an underrated sedan.

Solid numbers considering it's not a plugin. I picked up a 750e at the end of September. I'm getting a combined 54.1mpg which has been amazing. I'm easily getting 800 miles on a full tank (but I plug it in everywhere). It's also the first car I've owned that I drive in efficient mode all time vs. Sport. Except for an M5 in 2023 I've been mostly daily driving Porsches or MBs. The current range of BMW products are way ahead of their MB counterparts. I test drove the new S class as well and it wasn't even a close call between the cars.

I bought the i7 so no use my comparing my numbers, but re ocb181's comment, I have to admit I looked long and hard at getting 750e hybrid -- a mostly perfect combo of electric and ICE. However, I figured if I was going to turn my back on another ICE vehicle, I would jump fully into the electric "pool" instead of just dipping in a toe. Still, that 750e -- GREAT choice! Actually ALL G70s in any configuration are great choices!

I think PHEV is so cool. Perfect for short trips and city driving and it sips gas on the highway. Realistically EV is perfect for me since I don't drive much and charge every night (I have had several and have one in the garage now) but I love the concept of PHEV. I plan on getting a Urus SE soon and after driving it the car is 10x better with the electrical system.

Bravo to you, but I still pick the v8 every time lol

I really wanted to love the PHEV when I got my i7 but the electric motor is still behind the transmission so there's a fair bit of throttle lag when it needs to downshift. If it had the throttle response of the i7 I probably would have ended up with it instead because it would have been awesome for long road trips.

100%
You’d be also surprised to know how many long-term Mbenz customers have switched to BMW for the same reason. Mbenz feels at least 5 years behind on all fronts. At this point, it’s impossible to compare because BMW has significantly improved its game. We have a number of co-owners of RollsRoyce sedans in this forum, and they’ve all attested that the 7 is now at the same level of comfort and quality. This is huge.

I had several S-Classes, and switched between Audi and BMW since 2014. I would say BMW is absolutely the best car out of the big 3 luxo barges.

The thing is, the 7-series showed up right as Mercedes and Audi decided to experiment with how far they can push “cost cutting” before it gets embarrassing...

And it worked well for BMW as they brought out a new, massively improved generation at the exact time the S-Class and the big Audis started sliding backwards in materials and execution. So yeah, it’s not hard for the 7 to feel “absolutely the best” when the usual competition is downgrading itself.

I can tell you in the NYC area I see a ton more 7 series than I have during the previous gen, albeit less S Classes too, when they used to be everywhere. S Classes are still around, and always will be, but thankfully BMW is giving them a run for their money!

Wow, although that really shouldn’t be a surprise. Mercedes has clearly struggled with this new gen. They couldn’t push nearly as many W223s at launch as they did with the previous generation in 2014. You've noticed it yourself in NYC. The ratio (or decline in sales) during the launch year is almost double compared to the prev generation. Meanwhile, BMW sold more 7 Series than S year over year since the launch of G70, and people see it as a more desirable car right now, not just by design but by numbers too....After the previous S generation, a new boring/plain design is one thing, u could still push the car, but a boring design plus creaky interior is a no-go (you could gain a few customers, but they will not return to the brand or renew the lease with the same car as before). I might have given the new S63 a shot if I wanted/needed an ICE car, natural transition from my Alpina B8, but I’d still be very nervous about that interior quality, especially coming from two W222 before, and now, after living with the G70, it’s even harder to ignore.

Just in my neighborhood alone, there were 4 W223 in the past few years. 3 of them were dumped right after the end of their lease mark. Only one is still around and he is the closest to me. He's really into the G70 and felt positively jealous when I got mine. The 760 is next for him. I know that a VERY high %s of people on this forum came from a previous S-class. I can hardly find anyone on Mbenz forums coming from a BMW to Benz in recent years.

put me in that^ column. i had a s-class in the garage for nearly 40yrs now. in january i order an individual 7 (delivered in march) because - you know - bimmer let me order what *i* wanted with the colours *i* wanted with the equipment *i* wanted spending the money that *i* wanted to spend. benzo thumbed their nose at me. and i bought the 7. like (forum member) streamliner says, "i didn't leave the benzo brand; it left me." and now i couldn't be more thrilled with my 7. i might go back to benzo if the 224(?) is anything like my previous s-classes over the four decades that go back to the 80s - if not - happy to stay with bmw.

Same here, although I might* stick with the brand for some of their other models, but the disappointing new gen W223 S-Class has been an easy skip for me especially after two back-to-back W222s. Since you mentioned him, Streamliner , he has actually been with Mercedes even longer than you (I think), and it’s honestly astonishing how far off the mark that one new generation has to be to make some people with decades of S-Classes behind them walk away from the brand. Creaks, cheap plastics, and plain tech are the last things I ever expected from a flagship S-Class…... yet it didn’t even stop there. I'd be forever grateful that BMW showed up, right on time, with a competing luxury sedan that looks and rides so much better for me.

WOW -- 694 miles -- I'm definitely jealous! With my i7 I need to "fill up" a lot less than half your estimated miles. In fairness of course I DO love the full electric version I have and it is certainly a godsend that I can now use Tesla supercharger stations...! Ultimately though, we all like our various G70 models for our own specific reasons. :-)
