video camera options
Hello, what are people generally using to take video? Sometimes cell phones, but I don't think people mount those outside vehicles while in motion. Thanks for any insights.

I think people are generally using Go Pros (or knock-offs) for mounting to the outside of the car, etc. Inside I think mostly phones, unless the budget/need calls for something better like the dSLR Engiman referred to.

I use a GoPro Hero 8 Black to take footage of when I'm on track on a motorcycle. The video quality and stability are excellent. What's not so great is the high battery usage. I'm only doing HD quality and not anything near 4k. But I heard the image stability being turned on also sucks a lot of power.
The other issue and you'll see lots of complaints of this is the camera overheating causing it to shutdown or just randomly stop recording. I've had the heat shutdown issue before. But I think the latest firmware seems to have solved it. This problem has been a common complaint throughout the various series of camera versions. The other option people are moving to is Insta360. |

I have some Akaso cameras. They're basically GoPro knock offs, but pretty decent and disposable cheap just about.
I also bought the Akaso 360 camera as well. You can make those 3rd person views that look so cool with it. It also can be used as a regular camera. My only need with it is 2 things 1) there is no built in tether attachment point. Most tracks require you to have a rigid tether for anything that is suction cup mounted. 2) the sound quality isn't great. It gets overwhelmed by loud sound fairly easily. To be fair, my track car is loud (and soon will be even louder), but it overwhelms the microphone in it, and it doesn't have a external mic port. I think some TESSA tape.over the microphone openings.will.help though. |
