New 4Runner launch seems to have been fairly low key.
SR5, Limited or Platinum are in consideration, among others, for a next vehicle. 4Runner is arguably the best vehicle on the planet in current production. |

I love our 4Runner. Which trim is your choice though?

Wheezy 4 cylinder that isn't that reliable. Still crappy gas mileage Still painfully slow No longer has the limited aftermarket support that comes with having used the same v6 and transmission for like 25 years or more. I think you'd have a hard time arguing a 4Runner is a better vehicle than like a Tahoe Z71 diesel, which is larger, more capable, more reliable, and better on fuel. |

While I'd love to see it, no one is really off roading their Tahoe Z71 diesels beyond their crappy driveways. But I wish that wasn't the case.

Toyota should have stuck to a 3.8-4.0 V6, added direction injection, done some intake manifold wizardry, and then added their tried and true 8 speed auto. The motor would have gained 30hp/tq+, MPGs would have increased 15-20%, and acceleration times would have dropped substantially. But no, they added a turbo motor and a hybrid option that is FAR more complex than a NA V6. Toyota hasn't done well at all with it's turbo motors.
The 6th 4runner isn't much quicker and mpgs are only fractionally better. Bonkers. The 5th gen 4Runner did 0-60 in upper 7s and 1/4 mile in the upper 15s at 88ish mph. The 6th gen non-hybrid 4runner does it in 7.5 seconds and 15.7@90mph. My wife's 2020 TRD Off Road on A/T tires routinely gets a combined mpg of 17. The 6th gen non-hybrid gets 18 mpg. LOL. We paid $38K for our loaded 2020 TRD Off Road Premium (list was $45K). The 6th TRD Off Road starts at $55K and most sell for $59k-ish!?!?!!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!? We love our 2020 4Runner. The biggest issues with the truck are it's wallowy, nose-diving suspension (easily fixed with a $500 set of Bilsteins) and it's 5 speed auto. The 5 speed is fine around town and speeds below 65mph, but at higher speeds, long grades, and/or wind, the transmission is dim witty, has overly long gears, and can gear hunt annoyingly. If they would just put in the RWD-based 8 speed auto that has been out since freaking 2007, the 5th gen 4runner would have been epic.

To me, so a great extent, TRD Pros sell base 4Runners like how Raptors sell base F150s.

Agreed. I say that all the overlanding/off road features simply make everyday driving better. Like even Raptors, most probably haven't been off road besides driveways, but leaving any concert where you are sitting in a car line for 2 hours? meh lets just drive through this field and hop this curb like it is nothing lol [exactly what I have done in my 4Runner like 5x)

Or just further develop their 2GR-FXE V6 hybrid system and slightly increase battery capacity. It’s a bulletproof V6 with bulletproof batteries, easily passing emissions, and the RX450h gets about 30 MPG. Arguably one of the most reliable drivetrains humans have created, no idea what Toyota is doing.

My 2018 with 33" AT tires, very heavy rock sliders, roof rack, 2.5" lifted, and regeared to 4.88 gives me ~15.5mpg on highway. Before all the mods I was getting 19-20mpg constantly. NM, only now I noticed you said it was "combined mpg" Last edited by vt100; 08-07-2025 at 07:15 PM.. |

Besides the engine, Toyota also dropped the ball with the 2nd row seats - they don't go down the same way you could fold them in 5th gen. The floor in cargo area isn't flat any more and that's a big deal to me.

Agreed! I'm a Toyota guy with two Toyotas in the garage right now, and I passed one of the new 4Runners in traffic this week. My initial reaction was "what is that?" then followed by "oh yeah, they came out with a new 4Runner."
I'm convinced Toyota's only marketing plan for this is to hand it over to YouTubers. I don't think I've seen the first billboard, commercial, anything. Just the random 4Runner thumbnail that creeps into my YouTube feed now and again. There is seemingly tremendous overlap between it and the new "Land Cruiser"/GX (ahem - Prado). Their wheelbases are identical, overall length and width have less than an inch difference. Heck, even the prices have overlap. I'm still a bit lost as to what it is... |

I can't wrap my head around the need for these huge LCD/tablet displays.
Would be a cool new car otherwise. I still think the old ones are better.

Why I like our 5th Gen. Big enough/updated enough to age well. Sort of like 90s CGI. Isn't as good as 2000+ but you aren't laughing at it.
