Porsche dealership reset my check engine light without fixing anything

Funny story, brought the car to dealership with check engine light that was an emissions issue. Dealer reset the light and told me to pick up the car. I called Porsche of America to complain, they said there is nothing they can do because there is no light so there is nothing to diagnose. WTF? What kind of service is this lol

Might have been the gas cap thing, which is just a reset of the light. Presumable there were no codes to be read so they just reset it.

The door sill plate from my GLC300 fell off. When the car was in for service, I asked them to glue it back on. SM says they can't do that, I'd need to buy a new one and it isn't covered by the CPO warranty. I asked him how they would attach the new one. He says, "We just glue it on."

WTF??

Dude, you are lucky enough to drive a Porsche....This is what you have to complain about?

What exactly was your complaint? That they didn't replace some physical part?

Do you call up Apple to complain when your iPhone locks up and you have to power it off and back on to fix it?

what he is saying is that they aren't your handyman to fix your wear and tear problems for free. But if you buy something from them they would gladly install it free.

$15 Bluetooth Dongle that in connection with an app, will read any code that pops up, usually with an option to reset most codes.

That said... A dealer should not be resetting a code without addressing what caused it. Doesn't matter what it is, codes don't pop up for no reason. The code is in all probability still stored where the dealer can access it (History) and or they probably have it and can provide a printout based upon your Vin! This is a non negotiable item, and the dealer would be hearing quite a lot of bitching on my part until rectified!

Crazy...

Its true, there's always a reason but not always a fault or a failure.

I've bought 7 cars from them. That should count for something. And I would have paid them the labor to glue it back on. I just don't see the need to buy an entirely new piece when the one I have is fine.

What you wrote makes no sense to me.

When car is under warranty and check engine comes up, dealer supposed to fix the car, not reset the light

Ok so you left that out of your original post. Agreed they should properly address that.

CAN bus errors can and do occur when there's actually no faulty part present. Packets get lost, the network gets flooded, shit happens. Doesn't always mean there's a faulty part that need to be replaced. You made it sound like the check engine light came on and you immediately took it to the dealer then complained that they reset the light and didn't replace a part on the first occurrence.

But based on your other post just now, where you elaborated that this has happened multiple times, it does seem there's a part they need to address.

Never had any of that in past 25 years. Check engine light always came up when there was an error and part was bad

I had a fluke code come up twice without a clear reason, then go away after a stop/start.
My dealership swore up and down that unless the CEL was actually showing/active, they had no way to go back into memory to see what happened. I can't really believe that this could be true, can it?

Well that's your singular experience in 25 years of driving. I, on the other hand, spent 10 years engineering diagnostic equipment and repair information for CAN based modules across multiple Daimler platforms. Do some reading on CAN messaging protocols, or don't. I'm telling you phantom anomalous errors can and do occur.

Anyway, I hope you get your P car fixed. If that light has now come on multiple times despite a reset, I agree, there is a physical error there that should be addressed. Good luck.

Maybe they thought you were not technical. If the gas cap isn't on right it throws a code. I'm sure they documented the code.

Wait until your warranty runs out and see how eager they are to repair your car.

do you drive your Porsche often or just once every 7-10 days ? If its a once a week car do you keep it on a battery tender?

My 458 would throw fluke codes all the time if I didn't drive it often or let it sit off the battery tender for long periods.

you could always just buy a $10 code reader from Walmart and read/clear codes yourself too

That's not how dealerships work though. Every "job" for the car is documented in work orders/instructions and the glue most likely comes with the part. The job is going to be "replace" the part, which is why they'd be ordering it. There is likely no porsche task for "repair the glue".

More reason to DIY or develop a relationship with an enthusiast-driven independent.

Imagine if we had to drop off our significant others for service.

It might be a regulation thing, they cant be 100% sure its the right plate for your car unless you order a new one?

If they installed a plate with incorrect/misleading info on it they might be liable to damages based on the incorrect info.

Well i had no choice but to pick up the car. Its hard to argue when dealer says we can't diagnose the fault because we already reset ECU even though they know exactly what need to be replaced.....Will have to wait till it comes up again and I am sure it will but could take months with covid in place. Some weeks I only drive once or twice
