M5 or m760i

I have the first world dilemma of trying to choose between buying an M5 (base) and an M760i. I have spent more time driving the M5 and like it, but have also owned two 7-series before and rode in a friend’s M760i and thought it was special.

Not a track guy and like a compliant smooth ride (hence the M5 base, and not the competition). But, also have 3 college age kids who sometimes (but not often) are in the back seats. We do have an SUV as well, so rear seat space isn’t critical, but it’s part of the decision.

Anyone spent considerable time in both cars to share more thoughts on differences between them ?

Definitely go M760Li over F90. Even more so if you have other sports cars in the fleet. Here's why:

1. The M760 looks and feels far more special than the F90 (subjective).
2. The M760 doesn't give up as much performance as you might think to the F90 (15-20%).
3. The F90 gives up a LOT of space and luxury to the M760 in the pursuit of being 'sporty.'
4. The back seats. Incredible. The F90, not so much.

Neither are real sports cars. So if you're going to drive around in a big, heavy car with an automatic gearbox, I'd compromise a touch of sport before giving up space and luxury. Given your DD budget, I'm sure it wouldn't be a stretch to go out and add something much more visceral to the M760. For example, M760Li + Evora/GT4 > M5.

I would choose the Alpina B7 over both. More special than M5 or M760 at least to me.

I concur. The B7 is in a league of its own.

I would go with the M5, it's more sporty than the M760 and still a very luxurious car, the front seats on the M5 are amazing and overall a fantastic vehicle...

Funny I just got a 2019 m5 competition coming from an 2017 x5m and I am actually transferring the lease. I really wanted an 750 but the lease offer was to insane to pass so I grabbed it but now I realize it's too harsh a ride for everyday and I won't be racing around a track so I'm deciding between a 750 and m760. Good luck!

I didn’t like the M5 Competition. Those springs are too stiff. But I thought the M5 base had a nice ride.

I thought the M5 has a comfort mode for everyday drive! A friend of mine got the new M5C coming from AMG E63 and he loves it. Using it for daily ride...

I had the same decision to make...

After a test drive with the M5, it was too harsh!

The same day they had a 740Le xDrive to test drive! Wow!

I ended up with an 745Le xDrive. I've changed my mind completly! I'don't need a 600HP Car!

I have a 2020 M760i and it is Yummy in all aspects.

Fast as F.... handles nicely - comfortable when you want it to be - and a monster when you want it to be.

B7 if you want the power with a V8 grumble but it's definitely NOT as smooth of a ride as the 760.

All depends what you want out of your car.

But there is no comparison between M5 and M760. They both do two different things.

If it's the LCI 7-series, I would go for that but it will be way more expensive. I am not a fan of the pre-LCI 7 series, I just don't think it looks very good or special.

I've had several M cars and my lease was just up on my M550i. I ended up choosing between the F90 M5 and a 2020 7 series. I loved the look of the 7 LCI but M cars are just special cars....and regardless of what one wants to think, the M550i-branded cars look basic compared to the real thing. I went with the M5. Again, though, the LCI M760 would be the best of both worlds...

There is a reason why the 7 series with a equivalent engine is almost twice as expensive (at least in Europe).

Alpina B7 because I own one. But between M5 or M760, the M760 will be my choice.

In general to people driving a 5 series is not worth the extra $ and to people driving the 7 series it is worth it. To each its own.

M760 comes with so many standard features that you won't need any options. Also, every man should own at least one V12 in his lifetime.

First post!

Same situation for me.

In the end, the allure of the V12 and the M package on the body sold it for me. I looked at the Alpina, and the B7 was absolutely gorgeous inside and out. Very close call between the two, but the aggressive look of the M760i is what did it for me.

How do you like yours now that you have it?

Any critiques on the car on how to improve it?

After having Cadillacs (Escalades and CTS-Vs) specifically since 2007, it's "different." This is my first BMW and in fact, my first German car.

I really like the M760 a lot for it's looks, comfort and performance. It's extremely comfortable and very easy to drive (almost effortless) and the V12 just has so much torque - the power delivery is instantaneous. Yeah, the thing likes to drink gas like a college kid drinks beer at a keg party, but I knew and expected that going in. Eco Pro gives me the chance to drive it in NYC with "better" MPG but I'll spend the majority of time in Sport+ because I love the exhaust burbles.

I told LawGuy in a DM that I was comparing the M5 Comp, M8 GC Comp, B7 and M760. Talk about comparing apples, oranges and watermelons... but the Comps sucked me in due to the raw power and sound. I then looked at the B7 and M760 because my wife and I always admired the 7 since the early 2000s (E38?). The 760 won out due to the M package and V12. The Alpina was SO freakin hard to walk away from though. So hard.

I've not much to compare it to on a daily driver level yet besides the Escalade and the CTS-V. The Escalades I've had (most recently a '16 Premium) had a wonderful, comfortable interior that I'd put maybe at a tie with the 7. Leather for days, real "unfinished" wood inlays, memory seating, digital dash - great truck overall. Just got bored of them. The V, well that thing is violent. While the interior is gorgeous, the outside and the engine are absolute beauties and I plan on keeping both the 7 and the V to satisfy different urges.

What would I change? Well I've had it for about 3 weeks so far and I can't say too much, but I need to drive it more:
- Exhaust sound. Yep, I know 7's are luxo-barges intended to be floaty, quiet and like a little sanctuary on the inside, but I sorta want the floaty/sanctuary with a raucous exhaust note. The reason I came to BMW was because of the M5/M8 exhaust crackle.
- The US version (I think?) removes the M and V12 badging from the body. I've since put my own badging on (OEM V12 and M badges).
- I'd probably have upgraded the brakes if that was a possibly - larger pot calipers in the rear to help stop this missile. The big brakes on my V have me spoiled.

Any problems? A few electrical things...
- Well, the HUD disappeared on us for a few hours. Had to leave the car off overnight to get it back. Odd.
- Locking seems sporadic. Most of the time when I walk away it locks, but sometimes... it doesn't? Maybe because I opened the trunk? I don't know.
- The rear sunroof shade now won't open. It's stuck in the closed position and the tablet and front buttons to open it don't work. Very very annoying. I've tried looking at the fuses but I think the one I need is in the BDC, and I have no clue where to find it. Service scheduled... just hope they don't tear the thing up.

Overall - No regrets, been fun to drive, can't wait to flog it a little and go for a roadtrip. Electrical annoyances but I'm sure they'll sort out.

Also - sorry for the long post!!!
