Oil Change interval
Peeps,
I purchased a 2016 750iL Xdrive M Sport in January with 34k miles. It indicated an oil change at 1,000 miles. I performed that service. Once I got the service done, it indicated a 9,000 mile interval. That was awesome! However, plot twist, little by little the interval has been coming down. This morning, just after 1,500 miles after the last oil change service it indicates oil change required after 1,200 miles. The question for the group is - what is the normal oil change interval? I have always done it after 3,000 or 5,000 miles depending on the car. This is the first car that I have that keeps track of the interval. I have driven it fast and in highways, but less than 3,000 miles for an oil change? Thank you. |

In the UK it's CBS (generally every 15-18k) or every two years whichever is sooner, it's different the US but that service schedule seems short unless your commute is via a race track.

That is the weird part - it says next oil service should be February 2020 but says 1,000 miles from now.
Will wait until count gets to zero and take it to the dealership. |

So I took the car to the dealership. Mystery solved - the dealer forgot to reset the oil change interval counter.
It is weird that this is not something the user can do on their own. Also proves the car does not "sense" that the oil needs changing. It is just a simple counter. |

The BMW service interval has never "sensed" that the oil needed to be changed. The 1st service interval system used back in the 1970s - mid 90s used a combination of mileage, starts, RPM, engine temp, etc (things that would indicate engine load) to determine the service interval.
Then in 1996 with the start of SIA III...BMW changed to a simple calculation of fuel consumption to determine the service interval. On the E & F series BMWs...there is a way to reset the service (CBS) intervals yourself. There are lots of videos on Youtube that shows how to press & hold the trip odometer button to access this info. Unfortunately, I don't know if this is possible on the G series BMWs...but look for the video instructions and see if you can access the info...you can then determine if it's possible to update this on your own. Good luck...report back if you find out it can be done.
