Rear Ashtray Will Not Stay Closed

Has anyone fixed a rear ashtray that will not stay closed? It pushes in fine but does not stay closed and pops back out. Dealer wants to replace the whole door panel. I don’t care if it ever opens again, I just would like for it to remain in the closed position.

Ashtrays you can get on ebay for almost nothing..
If you don't know the part number, use RealOEM.com

Change the door panel for what? The door panel doesn't even come with ashtray installed, lol. Those geniuses would get door trim without all the mounting parts and then would probably go ahead and transfer over all the mounting parts from old door, including ashtray. Must be some real clowns working in that dealership. I would avoid them in the future.

As JellyStyle mentioned, you can get one dirt cheap from ebay or even from dealer. Ashtray mechanism themselves dont cost anything, even new OE, and you can use cover lid from your old one. Door card has to come off for repairs, though.

The ash trays assemblies are sold, by BMW, separately from the door panel.
  • Left rear door ashtray, Qty 1, Part Number 51427398885
  • Right rear door ashtray, QTY 1, Part Number 51427398886

About $79 each from BMW parts counter.

It's held in with the following hardware:
  • Fillister head screw, 4X12mm, Qty 6, Part Number 07147122390

Or you can go to eBay for $14 units...

You might want to find another BMW Stealership.

Thank you all so much! That is much more reasonable than replacing the whole door panel! Does anyone have instructions or a visual on how to remove the door panel to access the ashtray? Thanks again!

Here you go. Suggest you have couple of those panel clips in spare as few of them tend to break during extraction.
