760 vs 740 Dilemma

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I am in the market for a 7 series and had a chance to drive a 760i at my local dealer. They didn't have a 740 for me to drive. The particular options I am interested in, the difference of 740 vs 760 is around $14k. My dilemma is which one to get? Given that 740 has 375hp and about 300 lbs lighter than 760, I am not concerned about power. Has anyone driven both to be able to compare them? FYI - I live on the east coast but we don't get heavy snow and my town cleans the roads quickly so don't think lack of xDrive would be a problem from snow perspective

I didn't test drive the 740 , But I am sure that the 740 doesn't lack power at all , 0-60 in 5.2 seconds is pretty quick , for me as a personal preference i like buying the most powerful engine that i can afford so i got the 760, so it really depends on what you are looking for . I think also some options are standard on the 760 that are not available for the 740 like the active integral steering .

I would not have one of these cars without IAS. It makes the car more maneuverable and also more stable at high speeds.

I'm driving a 740i moving from an X6M and it drives perfectly fine. The power is great and you get instant torque. Again it's up to you to justify the price difference between the two...but also to be fair I would get the 760i for the exhaust tips alone.

Thanks! Super helpful. Have you ever felt you needed a tighter turning circle since this car is massive? Also the rated mpg of 740 is so impressive for a car of this size

At first I did, but living with it for almost a week I never really needed the extra help of IAS. I would've loved to have it though to be honest. Also i'm absolutely loving the fuel economy on this car - I only get half of this on my X6M

Happy hunting!

I am quite satisfied with the 740. Having moved to BMW 7 series from MB S Class sedans for decades, and one being the S600 V12, I have developed a real admiration for what BMW can do with the B58 six cyl. engines in the 740. Frankly, I don’t mind a bit getting 25 MPG around town, like this new 740 is getting. I do equip them well with the better grades of leather etc. My 2023 drives like a dream. More power than the 2020 I turned in and also more refined. Maybe getting older contributes to this, and it is fine, I just never feel like the extra power the V8 offers is warranted. The auto stop, start used to bother me in the 2018, and 2020, and I always would disable it but now it has become almost imperceptible. Of course, I only have less than 700 miles on this new car, but my opinion on the 740 is higher. When I would have the cars serviced, the loaner was a 750 several times and not once did I feel like, “gee, I like that one better”. Certainly have no reason to not like the 760 but just offering opinion.

Thanks for your perspective! very helpful. I am leaning towards 740 after hearing everyone's thoughts. The only thing I think I will miss will be IAS but I drive my cars more laid back these days so not sure the additional agility provided by IAS will help me much. I have wasted so much $ on cars that trying to be more sensible with my decision this time

Your last sentence entered in my decision as well. What can I possibly do with the extra
V8 horsepower.

In this day and age 5.2 is pretty slow. My last 3 cars were all under 4.5 and even now with a 3.6 anything 4+ seems slow

There is minimal delay (at least until now) in terms of power delivery. I know the 48v mild hybrid is not much but I haven't felt any delay so far, which I like.

There is no comparing the two since they're completely different cars, but i'm using my X6M for my daily commute to work now and keeping the 7er for my evening outings and let me tell you - I'm starting to get used to the comfort of the 7.

The difference in gas mileage might might sway me to choose the six.

I was thinking the same until I drove both back to back. I think to get the full experience, 760 is the way to go

I don’t think that you can go wrong with either engine.

Its not about the engine alone. It’s about the impact of xDrive and rear wheel steering on ride quality (and cornering) on such a big car. I wish 740 these options were also available on 740

Congrats to you too! This forum lacks photos. We should start a “What did you do with your G70 today” thread. Feel free to start one when you get yours and I will follow your lead in posting photos in that thread 😃

After much back and forth and even walking away yes, I was able to get about $12k off and a lease without markup. $1840 including tax on a 36/10k and $10k down on $140k MSRP. I found a broker in California that could get me 11% off MSRP but the lease MF was marked up so didn’t go for it but it really helped my negotiation with the local dealer.

What about you?

Great idea, I’ll post pics after I pick it up. There’s snow forecasted and since it comes with summer tires I may have to delay pickup. Let’s hope for good weather. Will go straight to Discount Tires and swap the 21” wheels to 20” and snow tires. Wish all-seasons were available for the 21s but no luck.
