Car stops itself when parking

Maybe this is normal and I never noticed it before, or it wasn't working before and now is...

When I back into the garage (never happened going forward) the PDC just goes crazy beeping at me because I have to park within a couple of inches of some cabinetry to get the car to fit. Yesterday, it kept applying the brake (still in drive, doesn't put it in park like it would do if the door was open) when I got close to the cabinets.

Anyone noticed this before? It creates quite a challenge when parking in close quarters.

And no, this was not self-parking. 90% of the time when I try to do that, the key can't communicate with the car.

Uncheck the box in iDrive for brake assist. It is highly irritating and overly intrusive when activated.

Or could be the auto hold button in the engaged position. Quite annoying when going backing into parking spots as sometimes causes me whiplash meh

Time to read the owners manual (there’s one built into iDrive that has a search feature, too). You have one of the safety features turned on that is applying the brakes to keep you from backing into objects.

If you don’t need this feature (as in this scenario of backing into the garage)…you need to turn it off/disengage this option.

Can’t tell how your car is optioned…but another work around (if you would like to keep the braking feature when in reverse active)…if you have HILL DESCENT you can activate it (press the button) when backing into your garage…and this will override the PDC emergency braking. This will also allow you to keep the emergency braking active for other driving scenarios and not have to keep going back into iDrive to activate/deactivate this feature.

In my G12 you turn off the emergency intervention part in PDC.

Read the manual? LOL

You guys were right, that option was set. Odd how it never intervened before.

Thanks!

I keep it on, because I have a dicey reverse-parking situation at home and would like not to hit anything (like my i8 that I have to hug VERY close to, a few times a day, every day). Sometimes it stomps on the brakes in the middle of my driveway--many feet from the garage. I attribute it to the time of day and the angle of the light. If the sun is shining directly into the garage, I think the glare on some objects makes the cameras less confident. I can't prove this, but it always seems to happen in the afternoons, and that is when the sun does that thing.

I know it is using radar as well, but if it relies on cameras as part of the decision making process, then that could be it.

Again...try pressing the HDC (hill descent) button (if you have that option) when reversing in this scenario and see if it cancels the emergency braking.

I ticked this option on a few weeks ago in the idrive and this week it saved my blushes as I was reversing back down a country lane due to meeting another car coming the other way, I'd have gone straight into a wall with it.

One of those brain fart moments but I was glad I'd turned it on.

You do realize that this is the 7 series forum, right? Not the X5.

I appreciate the suggestion, but my car was not designed for off-road adventures.

Setting the option in the settings took care of the issue.

I'm sure he didn't do it to annoy you, well done on being able to use the idrive and untick the option...

Majority of xdrive cars are equipped with hill descent including 7 series

Really? My car doesn't seem to have it. My wife's car doesn't. Where's the button? When I last drove an X5, it had a button for HD.

Yes, I did!!!

Apologies for the suggestion if the G series 7 series with xDrive don't have hill descent. I assumed that your generation 7 series had it like past BMW sedan models with xDrive. My f06 (650ix GC) sedan has hill descent as well as my f15 X5 SAV. You can see the hill descent button from the f06 sedan models with xDrive in the pic below:

Funny coincidence, it started happening to my car recently. It's more sensitive now but nothing crazy like some hondas. I just turn the steering wheel into the direction where the bin is so it won't intervene. Otherwise, I would just back up car at the speed of 2mph
