e90 vs. G35 FINALLY

in AUTOMOBILE magazine for the month of auguest theres a article that rated the G35 vs. e90 vs. CTS for best sports sedan and in the magazine quote:
"The Germans deliver the best driving experience. The 3-series is the finest iteration of the sport sedan, although the historically strong resale value and the free schuduled maintenance lessen the pain. it's definitely the most expensive. you get what you pay for. "
and also the e90 had the fastest LAP time because of it's superior GRIP I'll try to scan the magazine today

Yup, that's the comparison where the E90 pulled nearly 1 G of lateral (cornering) G-forces!!

Me too.
Test drove a G35 Manual, but my foot kept hitting the clutch pedal arm.
Than I thought about a used E46 Cab, but waited until the E90.
Really glad I did.

I knew I didn't want one the minute I sat in it. I can't get past that Fugly interior on the G35.

I had the G35 for 10 days as a rental of my totalled M3. Overall its a pretty good sedan to drive around the city with good torque. However it miss the solid bmw feeling. If I were to buy a 30k car, it would be on the top of my list tho.

Yes I was a little upset when I saw Road and Track's skidpad numbers of 0.83 G. (But then they tested the E46 M3 at .85 G so relatively speaking, that isn't so bad).

Skid pad results have a lot of variables. The one that I think could change the numbers, what tires on the cars?? Did they all have same make, type, winter, all season, or summer?? Then the stat's might be correct!

G35s are great on paper and by the numbers

Test drove G35s

I test drove both the coupe and sedan G35. Both were auto, as dealer didn't keep any MTs on the lot.
The coupe was actually pretty fun. If real back seat space weren't an issue, I'd have actually considered it. The cons were the overly noisy engine and my personal feeling that it seems more like a girl car.

The sedan had none of the fun of coupe (or the 330) - it just felt like a nicer version of the typical rental car.

BTW the dealer had a printout from Consumer Reports TAPED to the counter that showed Inifiniti 2nd in reliability and BMW way down the list. I think it was from a few years back when BMW got killed for all the 7 series glitches. I didn't call on him - I just said thanks for the time and left. I think I'll pay him a visit when my 330 gets in.

Read that article during my lunch break a week or so ago. Good read. I too test drove a G35 Coupe before, it just didnt feel powerful at all. You would think 280 HP (Drove an auto) would seem pretty noticeable but it wasnt.

I'm surprised the CTS didn't fare any better in this comparison. It wasn't even one year ago that the CTS won a comparo of six or seven cars (including the 3-series and G35) in Car & Driver (or Road & Track...can't remember) - in which the authors proclaimed it the "athlete" of the group. It's getting slightly long in the tooth from a design standpoint as its been out 2-3 years, but its pretty well regarded dynamically. I almost bought a used CTS-V, which is quite phenomenal with 400 HP. If the six-speed had been even half-way decent, it would have been in my garage.

No one can get permission to post the article? I guess I will have to go and lime in the magazine aisle at the grocery store.

Really? Thats funny cause i checked out the coupes and 1st- i thought the back seat was toooo small, 2nd-the interior styling sucked, and 3rd- i thought it was more of a "guy's car"..
My neighbor has the g35 sedan and we're always bickering about quality, performance btw bmw and inifinit hehe..
Yes, he has much more power, but i believe my handling and styling is far better than his. Plus i think the g35 sedan looks more for "middle aged" people. The 3 series bmw looks great for everyone, old or young it can appeal to both.

it's not a great article, in general automobile is a lame magazine.

They always have tests, almost never picking a winner, and they don't get test data usually

Oh my god. You're kidding right? The CTS won a comparison test? That involved the 3 series and G35? Are you shitting me?

That is one helluva claim you're gonna have to back up with a specific issue date before I believe it for one second. Nothing personal but the CTS can't come close to winning such a comparison unless the editors are on drugs.

There was a quote in autoweek a while back from bob lutz (GM head)

something to the effect of, the materials we used in the CTS interior are actually very expensive, they just look cheap

the americans are still a joke

Yes, it won a comparison test in the June 2004 edition of Road & Track (http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....page_number=1). But no, you are correct, it was not against the 3-series and the G35 - my memory failed me. It was against the larger, mid-size models of all the luxury makes. The comparison included the Audi A6, BMW 530i, Cadillac CTS, Chrysler 300, Jaguar S-Type, Merecedes Benz E320, and the Volvo S80 T6. Stiff competition none-the-less.

A quote:

"It's not easy to finish first in this company — there isn't a car in this group any of us wouldn't be happy to have in our own garages — but the Cadillac led the pack on a combination of outstanding performance and relatively reasonable price. In every test there's one car that causes people to grin and say, "This is the sports car of the bunch." In this case, that car was the CTS....Handling from the Nürburgring and Blues from the Delta, all in one fast American car. Nice combination."

To each his own, but you might try driving one before being overly critical. It is impressive in its own right.
