On an Epic Road with the wrong car :(

So I'm in Moldova and only rental car I was able to find was a Kia. I proceeded to venture into the country side and ended up on the M2, which is a fantastic road to drive on but with a Kia wasn't able to fully enjoy it. If any of you guys are ever in the region I strongly suggest taking a spin on it.

Kia Rio was the crappiest new car I ever drove. I got it as a rental in California and hated every minute of it. The trunk lid felt like it was made out of a tin can.

I had a similar experience with a rental in Switzerland. I ended up with a Ford Focus C-Max. Actually it wasn't a bad car, just was somewhat disappointing driving up a beautiful mountain road trying my best to keep up with the Porsche 911 in front of me. Ultimately it was fun, but it would have been great in the Porsche instead.

Wait... what about all those guys who say “it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast”...

You were definitely having more fun than the Porsche guy it’s too bad you didn’t realize it

At least you were in a sedan. My wife decided we needed to do our trip around New Zealand's South Island in a camper van... some seriously wasted driving opportunities in an absolutely amazing country.

The last 4 times I drove on the autobahn here were my vehicles:

My 135i M sport. It got to 155 mph in a serious hurry - that car was a rocket. And turned quite a few heads - which I wasn't expecting. Turned zero heads in the US - which I liked.

Smart forfour. Awful gearbox and anemic power - top speed was like 88 mph.

Citreon C3. I put 2,700 miles on through at least 5 countries. Nice car, pedestrian gearbox and not enough top end - but better than the smart. Fit 4 and all of our luggage - and a 2 week collection of beer to bring home.

My 320i sport. Didn't spend much time in it, but it cruised the autobahn like a pro.

I wish I had the chance to drive my 550i M sport on the autobahn. I think it would have been pretty sweet, but I wasn't about to spend 70k plus for a new one of those. I should have done a muffler delete on that car. That engine sounded so good.

I drove a rented Mustang from Santa Cruz to LA. Great trip, but I made my family nearly sick a couple times.

Due to work, I sometimes end up in fun areas with shitty rental cars.

I did rent a Q60 Coupe in Atlanta and took it upto tail of the dragon, that was fun.
Hoping Denver Hertz has a good upgrade for me next week, otherwise I'll be stuck with what cars they have in the Ultimate Choice lot.

Good to hear. I'm planning a two-week drive-around there next spring. Trying to figure out what to rent ... maybe a Stinger?

:: ducking ::

A counterpoint to the OP: About a decade ago I have to drive around the Italian and French rivieras, from the Cinque Terre to Marseille, in a Renault Picasso. That's a French minivan. Talk about white knuckles ...

Is a lot of traffic on PCH? And if so are there areas to pass?

I've only done the stretch between San Diego to Long Beach. Beautiful drive but not what I'd consider an enthusiast's dream due to the relaxed pace of it all. But I'm sure there are stretches more north where if you head out at 5-6 am it's like a dream come true.

Ohhh man I remember driving a 135is I had as a loaner once. That car was a rocket and the steering/chassis were sublime. I don't think BMW will ever build a car as raw as that thing ever again.

Hit an undisclosed speed on the highway. Such cars are like a drug that you can easily get in trouble with.

Yeah, it was the last car I had as a daily that I would scare myself with. I had it flash tuned and did have to take it over the BMW governed speed to make sure that had been properly removed with the tune. It got there in such a hurry I couldn't believe it.

Kia Stinger would be a great car to rent for a drive like that. Get a chance to see what it is really made of.

I don't remember the specific sections, but best parts are the remote parts between Monterey and San Luis Obispo. I didn't have much traffic on my drive.

Be careful! Don't get pulled over. There's no telling how corrupt the police might be there.

I always rented the next to cheapest car in Europe. Just nice to have a small car and keep the fuel bills down. It can be fun in areas like Tuscany with Fiat with a 1400cc engine just trying to keep speed thru corners.

Downside is had to pull over for my wife to throw up in so many countries.
