Tesla Model 3 Goes to the track - "Hot Lap" @ MidO

Rudy and I had some fun this past weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with the new Tesla Model 3. Below is the in-car video from him and the "chase" video from me in the M3. Nothing special, but still entertaining!

We were up there running an HPDE with NORPCA (he has a track-prepped E46 M3, and I have the F80 M3). It was mildly track-prepped with DOT4 fluid and Michelin Pilot 4S tires, but stock brake pads! To be honest it could probably run a pretty respectable laptime with proper pads as the stockers were smoking on the warm-up lap.

I figured since there's quite a few Tesla fans in here I would go ahead and post up. I had a chance to drive it afterwards and was pretty darn impressed with it as well.

He made it to the front page of Jalopnik which is pretty cool.

Props for flogging a pretty different kind of car you would not typically see at a track day.

How did the shoulders of those poor P4S's look after a few sessions? Was the instability under braking due to the oem brake pads not holding up? Any issues with reduced power due to heat?

I instructed some Model S P85D's at COTA a few years ago and they went into reduced power mode after about a lap. You could still drive but it felt like about 70% power. They felt like heavy boats that didn't handle well.

I only ran three laps in the car - it was flat out dangerous on the back straight brake zone. Yeah the instability you see in the brake zone, is because the pads just were not slowing the car down. My guess is Tesla used a very low wear compound due to regen braking.

The PS4's still look new. You can barely tell the front left was driven on track. No issues with reduced power.

Harry's lap timer. Also used it for the overlay video which was shot with a GoPro.

Nah the interior is fine man. Quality was appropriate for this price point IMO. A HUD would be very useful, but I can see that being too much money and breaking up the simplistic layout/appearance.

He only did 3 laps so I'm not sure at what point (if any) it would go into limp mode. I wouldn't be surprised if it could get another 5+ laps in before any such issues would arise. We'll see if he ever gets brake pads so we have a chance to try again
