Not the exact same cars, but I have owned both D4 A8 (2012 and 2015) and currently have a G11.

Audi is a very nice car, but downsides for me as a driver were firmer ride, lots of tyre noise and steering was a bit numb. I have also been chauffeured in a D4 and very nice from the back.

G11 much nicer car from a drivers perspective, suspension much more compliant, and whilst still a bit isolated from what is going on, it is nowhere near as numb as the A8. I have not been chauffeured in a 7, so cannot comment from that perspective. All have been Quattro/xDrive.

I had LWB A8’s which were great for family, but now only need a SWB, hence G11.

In A8 SWB and G11 guise, there is not a lot of rear legroom for regular use, so do also look at LWB and G12 variants.

Given free choice between the two, I would go G11.

Best bet is to test drive, as we are all different, and you will then know what you prefer, as it is always relative to what you are moving from.

I had an Audi and it was something extraordinary and a joy, now I have a 740d and it is something sky-high when it comes to the comfort and culture of the gearbox and the 400bhp over unit (engine map modified)

I would not change back to Audi and its style of OLED tablets that distract from vehicle control on the road and tend to burn out, because OLED hates static images.

One likes dark girls the other blondes both pretty ...

Both are great cars so its personal preference and are loaded with the latest in technology. That said I would also take into account the best deal and longest warranty and the reputation of the dealer you are buying from. These cars need good expert technicians to keep them in top form. In the US I would say BMW dealers and parts supply are better but your market could be different.

I drove the new S8 before buying my B7 and thought it felt a bit more “floaty” than the BMWs. But the exhaust note was really great!

I drove a 2007 E65 Alpina B7 for three years, and then a 2013 S8 for almost six years before trading it in for a 2017 B7. I then sold that B7 to get a 2021 B7.

I really think they drive differently. The power difference between a 750i and the S8 (plus) will be noticeable I think.

I actually feel that in comfort mode the G12 can feel a little floaty but it hunkers down well in sport(+). The S8 never gets as comfortable as the 7 series in my opinion. I lowered the S8 with a lowering module and it looked awesome. I ran 22s and the ride was fine. In my experience, the 7 is a little more planted in corners and offramps.

The tech is a little different. I am not sure if either of the cars has Apple CarPlay, but I think the '16 750 might, but maybe not wireless. I am pretty sure that the S8 did not have it, but I could be wrong. Once you have true phone integration into your infotainment, its hard to go back to not having it. Not sure how you feel about digital gauges as in the 7. Analog gauges in the D4 S8, which in my iteration did not make good use of the center screen as in the A6's. The last model D4 Audis did have HUD, which mine did not.

The exhaust of the S8 was one of its best features. I had a Milltek System, and it was the best sounding car I have ever owned.

The last point is whether you have rear passengers. The S8s in the US were all short wheelbases prior to the D5. I am 6'3" and my kids are tall, and they did not like being in the S8.

This was the deal breaker for me. I’m 6’2 and my kids were cramped during the test drive too.
