More HP in 2020

I just discovered today that the 2020 750i xdrive not only has a bigger grill, but they squeezed out more HP in the engine too.

Anyone spent considerable enough time behind the wheel of a 2020 and an earlier model to tell whether its appreciable or more of a paper difference?

Current owner of a 2019 750. They gave me a 2020 as a loaner for a couple weeks, and to be honest I couldn't tell the difference. A big part of what makes these cars seem fast is dependent on the transmission shift points. These transmissions "learn" our driving styles and shift accordingly. The loaner must've been babied it's whole life because even in Sport mode the car felt sluggish.

Would be a pitty when you can't feel it.

Torque is up from 650Nm to 750Nm, which is 15% more over practically the entire rpm band. Power is up also 15% which seems a serious upgrade. This renders the M760i rather obsolete.

You can make up the difference easily with a simple ECU tune. I did a ecu remap (tune) recently and it transformed the car specially in sport mode. Very very torquey V8

Interesting. Can this “learned shift points” be reset if you a preowned car?

I know I’m comparing my 750i which is RWD with a new one which is 4WD only, but it’s also 15% heavier, so once up and running and past any traction issues it won’t feel any different.

I had a '17 until October '19 and a 2020 since. I drove the 17 mostly in adaptive mode and same for the 20. The 20 feels more lively and responsive and this is something I noticed immediately. Noticeably quicker off the line -- and I am not a jackrabbit at all. Also noticeably quicker to accelerate from speed while on highway. But of course I have no way to quantify now.

There is a way to reset the "learned" shift points. Ignition to accessory and then press gas pedal to floor for 1 minute. I believe this resets the learned shift points to whatever the default is. After that the car will "relearn" -- and there are some who say this is bogus. But it also can't do any harm to try.

AWD adds about 4% in weight. But indeed, when you'd upgrade to 2020 because it would mean a world in difference, that will most certainly not be the case.

The "learning" is only an integration of criving style for the last 30 to 40 miles. So just drive a bit spirited for an hour or so and he will have understood.

I received a major torque increase when I tuned the ECU.
Day and night difference.

You should feel it, there is .3 second difference between pre-LCI and LCI from 0-100 kilometres. According to BMW 0-100 in LCI is 4 seconds flat vs 4.3 seconds on our cars!

Since I own both M760Li and M850i (same engine as in 2020 LCI 750) I can certainly say the engines are very different. And no, it does not make the 760 obsolete. The V8 sings, it is loud, powerful and busy. The V12 is as powerful and as quick, but much more effortless, more pleasant, complex and nicer exhaust note. It is more fun and more enjoyable to drive.
Prior to the M760Li I had 750Li 2016. I have to say the upgrade was worth it, more than I thought it would be.

Of course they have a different character, but part of is it because BMW has chosen to do so. No doubt the 750i will be less bussy than the M850i which was launched as a sports car.

The M760i was also an assertion of superior and refined power. I presume with the improved V8 the delta has become too small to maintain the 760. I guess BMW already communicated that they will discontinue this engine?

I could feel it going from a 2019 750 to a 2020 750 loaner they were both xdrive.

I am going to tune mine.
