BMW smart/touchscreen key

I sold my Alpina and still have the “smart key”. Tesla did not want it when I traded in the B7.

Can it be reprogrammed and is it worth reselling?

As far as I know, the key has the VIN embedded and cannot be reprogrammed for another car.

I can not believe that the Tesla dealership did not want the key. That makes no sense.

Worthless, can not be switched unless there is a super duper programmer that I am not aware of who can do this. Even BMW can't do that.

By the way, what a silly move my Tesla! What did they not take it! Man I hate how many of these vehicles on the market WITHOUT the display key even though it is on the build sheet. I always blame former owners for being greedy and keeping it, but I guess it is the dealers. Maybe because it can not be hanged or so!!!

They are one-time paired with the car. I had to get a brand new one from BMW for my car when I bought it used. Bit of a waste.

Thanks for all of the replies. This remains a great forum. Wish there was a good Tesla equivalent, but alas, there is not.

Have you had any mechanical issue with your B7 while you had it?

The 750Li I just bought was also missing the display key fob. When I checked into getting one I learned they cost $899 for a replacement. My question is, is it worth it? What can I do with the display key fob that I cannot do with the standard key fob?

Thanks,
Steve

You can remote park or drive out of spaces. I like to have the option when I touring Europe. Whether that’s worth it for someone else.

Not all display key have parking functions, depending on the car's equipment and the display key is selected follow the vin number by an authorized BMW service only

And here i am, i traded my 2018 Tesla model S for a BMW 750 Li...you will be back. The Tesla is cool but the novelty wears off after a while when you realize how much you miss the luxuries that come with a BMW and how nice they are to drive. Unless you drive enough to make the gas savings significant, I really missed the throaty roar of a big V-8. That being said, the Tesla is a lot of fun for a while.

Agree with this. Have had four Teslas but went back to BMW this year and there's no comparison in refinement and quality. Sure, the instant torque and acceleration is fun but I'm not doing 0-60 sprints very often these days.
