G12 Question - NEW TO ME!

I am at the border of trading in my 2019 530e 60K Miles for a loaded 2016 750i xdrive 40k Miles.

Is their anything I need to be worried about? Any suggestions? Is this a good move? Is the V8 on the G11 2016 model year reliable?

I like the car, it has all the interior features checked including rear seat executive package, massage rear and front seats and the tablet in the rear seats, with drive assist pro and Harmon Kardon speakers.

I appreciate your suggestions and advise before I pull the trigger.

Quick decisions when buying a car are certainly not good, but due to the current times, good copies disappear from offers in the blink of an eye. So if yours is a good price, I'd rather summarize the decision, compared to your current one, the comfort and performance is heaven on G11. - Very similar maintenance costs.

If you manage to buy it, post pictures. (good luck)

Thanks. This is my 4th BMW (if I buy it) as I already have 3 BMWs in my garage now. No issues at all with all of them. So I was wondering why there is an emphasis on getting an extended warranty? These vehicles seem be super reliable and I also heard that the N63 with 2nd tech upgrade is super reliable too. Any thoughts?

This is just a car made by people and anything can happen at any time. The suspension is pneumatic (quite expensive) and you don't know how your car was treated by the previous owner, if for example he was a launch control maniac then you can only imagine the rest yourself. Of course, this is half the battle that you are buying a car from a trusted place. As for the engine and gearbox, if they have been treated properly you really shouldn't have any problems, however remember that 7-series is just a ton of electronics and BMW put all the best and most expensive into it.- So I think you will sleep more peacefully if you have such a full guarantee.

I personally experienced a situation of abrasion of the small thin cable through the clip under the wheel arch from the side of the fuel fille, adblue pump error popped up and engine start lock restriction.- Warranty saved my ass.

The engine and drivetrain are pretty reliable, but everything is controlled by computers. There are multiple electronic control modules. What I would be worried about in an out of warranty car is the electronics so if you get an extended warranty, make sure it covers all the electronics, or be prepared to self-insure. On my current (and new) G70, I expect to trade it in before the warranty expires. That one truly is a set of computers on wheels. On my '19 X3, whose warranty is about to expire, I am going to keep it and self insure as I have only 10,000 miles on it.

I think I need to leave the Warranty conversation out of this comparison because both, my current 5-series is out of warranty, and same for the G11 I am considering, some from that point of view they are equal.

I was mostly interested to see if there are any specific points of ups/downs of the trade in I am considering for the 19 530e 60k miles versus the 16 G12 40k miles.

I went from a 6 cyl F10 to a v8 G12, so the comparison is not exactly what you are looking for, but my experience was they are comparable in reliability. I had few problems with the F10 and few with two G12's. The only repair I can remember is a fan motor on the G12 that failed and was repaired under warranty (so I do not know the cost). I had no engine, transmission, or suspension issues (but mileage was low, roughly 10 -15,000/yr)

Your question already answers which car is better, the question is whether you want to buy it or not.

I honestly want the bigger, more comfortable/luxury sedan, but my wife likes her 530e better because she drives 15 miles daily to work, 100% on EV, and she just like the 5-series size and dynamics more than the 7-series. After-all this will be her car because I drive the X7, and the sedan is hers. Soooo, it depends on whether I can convince her or not. Also it depends on the dealer. I asked them to give me $4000 + the 7-series for my 530e. Their response initially was like one-to-one trade or maybe 1 grand at best, but I was greedy and asked $4500. They said they need to think about it and get back to me.

As a G12 7 Series Owner Myself since December of 2022, Everything on these cars is good it’s not a Range Rover that lives in the shop. The Air Suspension is reliable, Same for the Motor being a B58 in my personal opinion it’s the best Non M Car Motor available. But of course take care of the car, But really being a Modern BMW You don’t have any real issues just Properly Maintain the car and it will be good to you. But when you go see it, I recommend bringing a Code Reader and plug it in to see if anything pops up. I’ve owned 4 Other BMW’s myself and about to Purchase an X5 in a few weeks and these cars when Maintained well are Very Solid.

I think you get the extended warranty on the air suspension and the active grille in America. That tells you what to expect.

Mine spent 3 weeks in the garage whilst they waited for a new front strut to fix an air leak. The actual repair was pretty quick.

Overall it’s been much better than for the AMG S63 it replaced for time off road. The AMG spent 14 weeks over 2 years.

I ended up leaving the 7-series alone and decided to keep my 530e. Most folks recommended that the additional space and luxury of the 7-series does not worth the trade-in hassle and risk of replacing the 530e. Not sure, I still like it, but that 7-series is not under my radar anymore. Sounds like maintenance is more of a serious issue on the 7 compared to my 530e and I am not a fan of spending thousands of dollars or warranties only because they car has high tendency to cause problems.

BMW5and7 probably a wise choice if you do not really need the space or power.

I own a 750i G11 from 2016. It is a high maintenance hobby.
At ca. 120k km it already had two engine problems, that I read are quite common: coolant leak from the turbo return line and some kind of air distribution system leakage. They were both covered by the extended warranty from BMW Premium Selection so I did not pay anything, but in total they were nearly $4000 worth of repairs.

I am keeping it for passion (and to drive it every year on the german Autobahn). But I do expect more things to break over time.

The 5 is a beautiful car.
