Reminds me of some of the oil cooler incidents we've seen with the F80/F82. Those threads are a good read. I don't think anyone's car has been totaled, but they've needed new engines which isn't cheap. And the cause is very similar to what is described here - a small, hard object that bounces up inside the car from underneath and causes havoc.

Back when I used to own a Lotus Elise stories like this were pretty common.
One guy had a minor off track excursion and a small rock came up and ruptured the aluminum underbody. Also roughly an inch and a half long cut IIRC. The underbody is fastened to the frame and there is no approved way of repairing the aluminum of that frame. So the entire car was totalled... and it was an Exige to boot! Someone ended up buying an awesome track car for cheap and likely either welded it or sandwiched the tear between two pieces of metal. Those cars could also be totalled really easy if you curbed them at speed. You would bend the aluminum suspension mount points and there was no approved way of fixing. |

With motorcycles, a scratch to the frame is usually considered a total loss.
That means there are lots of salvage title sportbikes that are great trackday material! |
