Probably since I turned 40, I've been thinking of something special for my 50th birthday. I considered a significant purchase (think house, or special car), and a significant trip... but nothing felt right. Around September last year my goal for "the 50th anniversary of me" became clear. By April 2021 I will be in the best shape I've been in this century. I stopped my crazy cycling around 1999 (28 yrs old), and the turn of the century sets a good fitness benchmark to meet/surpass by the time I'm 50.

Right now I'm ~3 months in; I feel great; and have already established the habit of working out every morning. It's part of how I wake up now. Next step, I dial in my nutrition...

Here I am back in the day rockin my Mack Trucks coveralls with my Tims, on my modded Huffy Thunder Road, complete with "bread loaf" seat, and shorter forks. Ha!

Indeed. The night before is far worse than the day of.
I had to do the prep 3 separate times because I got sick and almost passed out the first 2 tries before dr switched me to different prep. Something in that Superprep just wasn’t for me. Man I wanted to give up but knew I needed to follow through as I had an ulcer at age 18 and hadn’t seen a GI in around 30 years.
LOL, +1 on that Suprep. I couldn't keep the 2nd round down and was horrified that I'd choked down that first batch of Satan's piss for no reason. thankfully the doc said it'd be good enough.

Let me throw in the background info that my doctors have yanked my competition license, banned me from being outside, and do not even want me driving on the streets other than to/from work and doctor appointments. My ticker only has 15-18% function, and is so electrically mis-wired that I'm running 100% electronic. No arc welders, radio transmitters, racing, or any of my other old hobbies.

If that isn't enough, I lived for two years with a 24/7 IV infusion pump of heart medication through a tunnel port in my chest. No swimming, no showers, no going out in the rain, and no trips out of state because the IV company couldn't ship across state lines or even provide a dressing change without a doctor from the other state signing for the prescriptions.

In all seriousness, they tried to put me on permanent disability three years ago. I told my cardiologist that if they would not let me go back to work that I wanted a referral to Dr. Kevorkian for a second opinion! Did I mention that I don't have much to live for other than my DW...and I'm worth more to her dead than alive.

So, when the doctor asks why I'm refusing this one test, my response is that I want one last surprise in my life...and they shouldn't take that last wish away from me.....
Oh, man. So sorry you're having to battle through all this. Try to harvest and share some wisdom out of the ordeal, if you can. And hang in there.

Old? Yeah, I am getting there. Have been dealing with a myriad of health issues over the past four years, thankfully none of them have caused me to attain room temperature...yet. I just look at it this way, no matter how much I may THINK life sucks on a given day, I always realize some people have it much worse.

I thank my lucky stars for a wonderful and supportive family (who put pills in my drink and tell me life is fine when I wake up).

Just learned today that my sister (2 years older) has been diagnosed with a bad heart valve. Dad died from complications after heart valve surgery. Mom has a bad valve but is too old for surgery. Younger brother (1 year younger) died a few years ago from a heart attack. Yet my damn insurance company claims there is no reason for me to have a stress test done.

WTF?

Go anyway. I have complained of heart pain for 20 years probably and always told it was nothing. I finally had whole workup done including scan and wearing a monitor. Results were favorable but gave me peace of mind.

+1

Especially with your family history. We all have to be our own best advocates when it comes to our health. The health care industry puts a lot of effort into telling us what we should do to be healthy, because it saves them money. They want me to eat a salad instead of a bacon cheeseburger, because it'll lower the likelihood that I'll need care that they'll have to pay for. When it's something they have to do and it costs money, well...that's just not possible, not a good idea, they don't do it that way, yada yada yada. They look out for their own interests, and we have to do the same.

I've been riding 100 miles/week for almost 3 years now and regularly see heart rates in the 180-190 range, so I doubt I have any serious issue at this point. But I would like some test done beyond a simple EKG to really put my mind at ease about it. About 10 years ago I had a stress test done and they said I had a strong heart. But shit changes in 10 years. I can't believe stress tests are that expensive in the first place. You run on a treadmill and then they do an ultrasound. Can't be that costly.

You're paying for the $2M settlement and lawyer fees and court costs for the fat fuck that vapor-locked on the treadmill 2 years ago.

They're ok paying for a colonoscopy every 10 years. That has to be pricey with the special room and equipment and all that. I would think a stress test is the same sort of diagnostic procedure to catch problems before they become hugely expensive to fix. But what do I know. I'll have another heart to heart with my doctor. Maybe with this new incidence of family medical history they'll come around and agree to a test.

Sux getting old.

LOL...it's been in the low 20's at night...and low 40's during the day.

I love it! But I'm my own personal heater.
