Axle boot replacement question

Hi all!

It is apparent that replacing axel boot on any X-Drive BMW is something that will happen at some point. I just didn't think mine would need it at 40K miles. At any rate - my question is as follows:

1. Since the left axel boot is torn, should I go ahead and have them replace the right one as well?

OR

2. Just replace the whole damn front axle (which would include two new boots one for each side).

The quote for standard left boot replacement is $1,400 at dealer / $800 at Indy shop. If a new axel is only around $1000 or so (Indy shop) I am thinking go that route and use it as measure as preventive maintinence?
