Tune reliability

Hi everyone, I have a 2016 750i xdrive and I’ve been planning to go stage 1 for quite a while now. However, I went to my local tuner who specializes in BMWs and he advised against me tuning my car and suggested it would put too much stress on the 750. My car had about 87,000 km as of right now. Is anyone here tuned with a 750? Also, how long have you been running a tune for and how reliable has it been? I’m planning on going with bootmod3.

I went with DME tuning for my Stage 1. I put about 40K mikes before selling the car. It was solid overall. DME did advise me against going further beyond stage 1.

With the amount of miles you have, I'd definitely change your plugs and do some maintenance before tuning.

These cars are not reliable without tuning, can you imagine what could happen after you tune it especially at 90k?

I say leave it alone, the car is already crazy fast considering the size and weight. My two cents!

I really only am considering stage 1 honestly, I don't really want the smell of catless downpipes when driving it as it is my daily. I want to make sure I do all preventative maintenance before I consider tuning though. Is there anything else you'd recommend getting done? I was thinking spark plugs and ignition coils but I'm not sure what else.

I think that's what I'd get covered for sure. Not sure what else to look at. I'd hit up Moe at DME. He's a great guy to talk to and will be straight with you.

Sorry for the late input, but I have a 2016 750 and got it tuned. Tuned by DME, I also went stage 2. I got it tuned about 6 months ago and I haven’t had any major issues with it at all. Before I tuned I installed new spark plugs, coil packs, and all 4 O2 sensors (mainly because I also installed VRSF catless downpipes as well). The only complaint I got is that sometimes when I park in my driveway which is kinda slanted, the rpms fluctuate from 700 to 1.5k while I’m just sitting there. DME told me they’ve heard of that happening with other BMWs they’ve tuned but the only thing they could think of that’s causing it is the position of the O2 sensors in the VRSF downpipes compared to the original equipment. Still haven’t found a resolution to that but it’s not something super under my skin. Other than that, I haven’t looked back a day. The power difference is unremarkable and the car sounds amazing. Let me know if you ever went through with it and what your experience was!

I haven't gone through with it yet! I'm actually getting NGK 97506 spark plugs swapped out right now as we speak, then I plan on going stage 2 with ARM or VRSF catless downpipes and a stage 2 tune. Did you buy OEM spark plugs or upgrade to a step colder like me? Also, how many kms or miles do you have on your car? I have also been considering swapping out the OEM ignition coils for the Dinan coils just for the sake of preventative maintenance. Really curious to see what the performance is like! Maybe you could post some passes or runs?

I also used the NGK. Make sure you gap them properly it makes all the difference. My car has about 46k miles on it now. I just got it back from my exhaust guy and I think I made it a little too loud lol. I deleted resonators and muffler then did a X pipe. The drone on the highway is a little much but other than that I like it. I will post some as soon as it clears up around here, currently getting hit with about 10-15 inches of snow sadly. If you do go thru with the tune, definitely get ahold of DME. Super supportive through the whole process and they made sure I was happy with everything that was done.

What gap did you go with? Unfortunately, I'm almost sure that my mechanic installed the plugs with just stock gap since I didn't mention anything about gapping them. Hopefully it won't be toooo big of a difference for me to have to take them out and gap them properly when I go tuned. As for which tuner, I haven't actually decided yet, but it will most likely be DME. Just trying to justify the cost over bootmod3's price and customizability! Although, I'm almost sure that the DME tune would be better. I'll post updates here when I go through with it!

DME advised me to gap them to .025, they come at .03 stock or at least mine did. If you go with bootmod3, I would see what their recommendation is. I didn’t know there was a tune available through bootmod3 for the 7, might not have looked hard enough when I was first shopping around.

I’m running BM3 stage 2+ (E85) and it’s been nothing but smiles. I have about 50ish k on miles and I been running it for about 10k. I did go with NGK 2 step colder plugs but I didn’t gap them (maybe when it’s time or before hand, I will).

I believe as longest you’re NOT trying to race to every light, full send every 5 minutes you should be fine. Always stay on top of maintenance, drive it as you normally would before the tune and such. Just don’t abuse it.

I really want to start running E85, what all did you have to do for that?

Did you find that the tune was worth it performance wise? I know some companies exaggerate their effectiveness, so while I am looking into doing the DME tune, I'm hoping its really worth the investment.

I've had them tune every bmw I've owned. No exaggerations and it's a night and day difference. Totally different car.
